For Calgary-based R&B singer Zak and record label Spylocal Records, this achievement is the result of hard work and perseverance.

The 18-year old Cancer, born in Dar-es-salam, Tanzania, moved to Calgary at the age of 3. The trilingual artist - he speaks English, French and Kachi fluently - cites Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, and BoysIImen as musical influences. However, growing up he has been exposed to various styles of music and because of that his biggest influence is legendary Hindi singer Adnan Sami. "I sing from my heart and Adnan Sami taught me to do that", says Zak about how this legendary singer has affected his music.

In 2005, Zak recorded and released "in evident" which garnered rotation on a local radio station. Since then, Zak has been steadily writing and developing his sound and is back in 2008 with his self-titled debut album set for release in 2008 through Spylocal Records. The lead single off the release "Playa in the past" features recording artist AR. "I'm definitely very selective about the records I get on. It didn't matter if he was an established artist or not, it was just the quality of the record, the quality of the music that made me want to get involved", says AR about his involvement with Zak and the Spylocal Records crew. "I'm very proud to record with a highly talented recording artist ", says Zak.
