Blessed with one of the most charmingly confident and unique flows on
the planet, Manhattan-born, Queens-raised MC Yak Ballz has been a staple
in the underground scene since he arrived in '99 by way of Bobbito
Garcia of the infamous Stretch and Bobbito NY based radio show. Born
Yashar Zadeh to Persian-Iranian immigrants, Yak was raised in Flushing
Queens and at the young age of 18 he began his journey through the
grueling matrix of the underground. He put out his first 12" vinyl
record through Bobbito's Fondle'm Records in 2000 and received an
astounding response during the tail end of late 90's independent hip
hop boom. With his ear to the street, Definitive Jux honcho El-P
sought after Yak's fresh new talent and offered him a12-inch
opportunity on the his then brand new Definitive Jux imprint. Yak
obliged and released The Freakshow 12-inch vinyl single, which would
later become a cult classic on the Definitive Jux Presents II
compilation CD. In 2004 Yak released his own full length solo effort,
My Claim on Eastern Conference records and received critical acclaim
for his heartfelt lyrics, dramatic beat selection, and energetic
delivery. Since then he has appeared and shined on a slew of material
from mixtapes, label compilations, as well as solo efforts from his
Weathermen conglomerates; El-P, Cage, Aesop Rock, Tame One, Camu Tao,
and Breezely Brewin. Yak is an original member of the Weathermen
supergroup as his inspiring lyrics have earned him such merit. The
last two years have found Yak touring heavily with the likes of Aesop
Rock, Murs, EL-P, Mr. Lif, and Cage playing shows throughout the
country and abroad while commanding crowds with his memorable stage
show. Gearing up for his new album Scifentology II to be released in
January '08 on FloSpot Records, the future is looking bright for this
young star as he continues on his path leaving a trail blazing behind
him wherever he is seen.
