World Religion was officially formed on June 17, 2006. However, the band started playing much before that. At the Hillview Talent Show in April 2006, two bands, one named the Far Side, with Brian Little on vocals and lead guitar and Sam Hausman on drums, and Digital Spandex, with Nicolas Valencia on lead guitar, Matt Smith on vocals and rhythm guitar, Jamey Blawie on drums and Daniel Mohr on bass, merged into a supergroup. This new, yet unnamed band which consisted of Nicolas Valencia on lead guitar, Daniel Mohr on bass, Brian Little on vocals, Sam Hausman on drums and Matt Smith on keyboards and miscellaneous percussion started playing together right after the talent show, starting out with Rob Zombie-style motorcycle rock, but eventually evolving into straight up funk, which was the start of their very first single, Bloodfunk. The song was written instrumentally at first (with only drums, bass and guitar) and then tweaked to incorporate Matt's keyboards and percussion and Brian's lyrics into the song. Unfortunately, before the band could begin, Matt decided to part ways with the band. This was a temporary setback, but the band continued strong, and recorded their first ever multitrack, bootleggish-sounding version of Bloodfunk. However, now a new problem was posed- what was the band's name? The band went through a few starters, including Deign de Gaulle, The Fade Aways, and Armada (which the Bloodfunk single album art was designed for). However, none of them seemed to stick with the band; they didn't suit each member. So, after a heavy brainstorming session with several dozen names coming up, the band finally decided on the best... and World Religion was born. The band is currently working on their next original song, still unnamed, and preparing their set list for their debut show, which will be on July 30th, at The Cave in San Jose.
