With These Words

It's been three years since With These Words released their last EP. 2005's 'Furthest Thing From Perfect' brought the band moderate success but three years of material left the band and fans with a catalog of songs that could only be enjoyed live. "Not having a follow up cd really hurt us," says vocalist Jessi Golden. "People would come to shows and ask us about recordings but all we really had to offer was an EP of songs we didn't play anymore and a few scratchy demos. We were growing as a band but had nothing to show for it." In December of 2007, the band parted ways with its co-founder Jan Schefferlie. "I think for a lot of us, we just felt that we had gone about as far as we could with him, both personally and musically," reflects guitarist Jake Stevens. He was replaced with long time friend Justin Golden. In the span of a few short months the band had established a new following by expanding out to a new audience. "We were really trying to show that this is a new band going in a new direction," adds Justin Golden. The band decided it was finally time to release a new album; one that would span the past three years, reflecting on their experiences both musically and personally. The band chose Grammy award winning producer Eric Delegard. Once the band got in to the studio though, the band realized that their older material couldn't stand alone with their newer, fresher sound. "We just weren't in the same place with those songs as we thought we were," notes bassist Phil Sahs. "We immediately went in to writing mode and wrote three new songs for the album: It All Crashes Down, A Little More and the title track The Science of Loss." On the choice to name one of the new songs after the album and not necessarily the other way around, Jessi Golden adds "Michael had already come up with the name for the album but the song just seemed to fit all the emotions we were trying to convey." Three months later the recording and post production process was over. The Science of Loss was finally ready to be released. "Everything just came together," says drummer Michael Villarreal. "Personally, over the past few years, we've all gone through some really big changes in our lives. There was no way that those things were not going to come out in the music. We used the phrase the science of loss to describe all the aspects of that tragedy. The hurt, the confusion, the anger and eventually the healing and I really think that you can hear all those in these songs." The Science of Loss will be released August 30th, 2008.
