Until the Return
Not knowing how to describe their style with one word, Shawn Thompson (guitar, vocals) Jesse-Lee (drums/percussion) and Jess Pruitt (bass) known better as Until the Return, invented Artcore. "Why let someone else label you when you can just label yourself," says Shawn. The band combines many styles and genres to create their music. The term Artcore is derived from their dynamic, artistic style and the term hardcore. And its this Artcore style that puts UTR in a category all their own. "We love so many types of music so to combine those into our sound was inevitable," said Shawn. This diversity includes melodic, heavy, emotional, soothing, groove and aggressive elements in their sound.
The members of UTR grew up in Arizona. Each went to different high schools, yet met various stages in life and started creating and playing music together in 2001. In the pre-stages Shawn had played in various other bands before meeting Jess and Jesse-Lee. "I was such a jerk to Jess in the beginning. I asked him to play with a band I was in, but not as a permanent part of the band, just to fill in and then we would decide if he would make the cut. He learned six songs in about a week," Shawn said. They started out as Eklektos, yet with changes in the band came a need for a different name. With new direction and perspective, Until the Return began playing local venues in March of 2002. The Lucky Dragon was the first to feature UTR. "This show was so bad because we didn't really know how to listen to each other and play music together. Our band dynamic was lacking," Shawn said. "But every band says that about their first performance. The second show at Bostons was good because we felt closer because it was just us, our rules. The music was sub par, but we have grown because of it," Shawn said. In 2003, Until the Return hunkered down in Action Jackson Studios in Mesa, AZ to record what would become their debut album/EP. They recorded 5 songs that would become the GROW EP. Released in 2004, the Ep set the stage of what Until the Return was all about. Songs of change (New November), looking back at harder times (Remember), honesty (Perfectly, New Voice) and positivity (Optimistic).
Just as the Grow EP was to be released, they had a minor set back. When their drummer decided that the band just wasn't his calling, they had to look looking for a new drummer. Their replacement would fill in for the next year and then parted ways because of "creative differences" (no band bio would be complete without a "creative differences" chapter in their proverbial book). In late 2k5, UTR was approached by a new upstart label regarding signing on to record another Ep with them. Waiting about 2.6 seconds to think, UTR signed to Rockview Records. It was a joyous event but when their second drummer left, they needed renforcements fast. Jess was playing in the MCC Jazz band "The Scubacats" and approached their drummer regarding the recent drum vacancy. This is when Jesse-Lee Yarbrough enters the picture. Bringing strong jazz influences, unique style, techique and musical knowledge created a refreshing new take on the songs that were to be the next EP.
Now we are at the present. UTR is currently about to enter the studio and put 5 more songs down on tape to create the forthcoming "Yourself Speaking" EP. Set to be released in Feb or March of 06, this new offering from Until the Return should be a refreshing blend of Jazz, rock, folk and things you have never heard.
UTR has also played in Arizona venues including Bash on Ash, The Evolution, The Starlight Room, The Mason Jar, Chasers, The Big Fish Pub, Donnie Broscos, the Paper Heart, the Clubhouse, Borders Books, Neckbeards and Minderbinders.
