Full BIography:
Big things often start small. The Swellers formed in June 2002. Within days, brothers Nick and Jonathan Diener, and bassist Nate Lamberts, wrote and recorded a rough, three-song demo. Within a week they had their first show in Flint, MI. Shortly after the band flew to Nashville to record four more songs, then later compiling an 11-song collection called "Long And Hard," which quickly circulated throughout the mid-Michigan independent music scene.
The following year The Swellers recorded a 10-song LP entitled End Of Discussion with former Suicide Machines bassist Royce Nunley, and sold upwards of 1000 copies while continuing to play shows all over Michigan. The young band earned a large fan base along the way, including a particularly devoted following in their hometown of Flint. Search and Rescue Records, a label known for its bands' busy tour schedules, took notice and inked the band to their first record contract in 2005.
The Swellers recorded with Mark Michalik, then based in Flint, Mich., and released their seven-song EP Beginning Of The End Again days before their week-long Midwestern/Canadian stint on the Vans Warped Tour. Longtime bassist Nate Lamberts left the band, and Lance Nelson took his place, while Garrett Burgett was added on second guitar, adding more depth to the band's sound. Out of state and headlining regional shows became a regular occurrence, but full-time touring was put on hold until Jonathan and Lance graduated high school in 2006.
While promoting their Search and Rescue EP, popular Japanese label Radtone Music, approached and signed The Swellers in early 2006. Beginning Of The End Again was released in Japan and sold over 4000 copies at a breakneck pace. In November 2006, the Swellers were flown out to Japan to play several major shows to keep the buzz alive.
In the year following Jonathan and Lance's graduation, the band embarked on five US tours, had a week-long stint in Japan, and continued to promote themselves heavily in the few gaps between trips. Following Japan, the band spent a month in downtown Chicago tracking with Mark Michalik at his relocated Sentient Studio. Their first proper full length, My Everest, was released June 5, 2007 on Search and Rescue Records (simultaneously released in Japan via Radtone Music).
Lyrically and thematically their most mature effort to date, My Everest, is somewhat of a concept album chronicling the lives of the band over the course of two years since their previous release. The opening track,"Vehicle City," talks about their hometown music community falling apart and friends leaving Flint as part of a mass exodus from Michigan due to its economic woes.
The album confronts sensitive topics, such as witnessing a deadly car crash on tour ("This Is My Everest"), thoughts on religion and society ("The Flood," "What's At Stake"), and includes a pair of songs about a close friend and fellow musician's untimely death ("Keep Looking Where Your Eyes Are Looking Now", "Skoots"). On a more upbeat note, My Everest ends with "The Way Back Home," an optimistic closer about having the unconditional support of friends and family.
The album earned critical acclaim almost instantly, becoming a staff favorite on PunkNews.org and AbsolutePunk.net. AMP Magazine gave My Everest high marks, and featured the band in its June/July 2007 issue, and Alternative Press featured The Swellers in its August and September issues.
While still having only one member over the age of 21, The Swellers are a more humbled, matured and dedicated group of musicians who have a clear vision for their future. They have effectively ignored the odd transition phase that the music industry has taken and have stayed true to their no-gimmick, DIY ethics. When they aren't busy booking their own shows, promoting themselves, or writing catchy songs, The Swellers will be on the road coming to a town near you, promising something big.
