The SmashUp TOUR BLOG 5.0
Jan 20--Alley Katz, Richmond VA: Great kickoff show in Race The Suns hometown! We felt like locals with a crowd reception that was warmer than a windowsill full of warm Richmond pie. The sound was great and we got kickass pix uploaded to our MySpace the next day.okay, so we look like turgid zombies with radish faces in thembut thats awesome!
Jan 21Jaggard Methodist, Altoona PA: Rocking the basement has never been this fun. And pizzas for the bands? Holy Moley. Is that how you spell Moley? We made sure to censor ourselves on the BLEEEEEEPEEEEP mic, it is a Methodist church after all. Guess you can say Hell right? Hell yeah. Awesome Sheetz!
Jan 22Albees, Utica NY: Ants hometown show, and what a homecoming it was. Not only did we get to entertain fans of all ages (stay behind the partition with your Bud Light sir) but we got to experience a home-cooked, Utican feast the likes of which you have never imagined at the Cee family compound. Next time Parkway Casserole? We left town in a 6-inch snow mini blizzard that Uticon failed to predict. Maybe theres something amiss with his sensors.
Jan 23The Crazy Donkey, Farmingdale NY: What a venue! This place was top-notch in every way, from the in-ear-monitor-knowledgeable sound men to the screaming, I-dont-give-a-rats-ass-I-have-midterms-tomorrow crowd. Thanks to Patent Pending for swapping slotsthats slots, not spit! Brian Rich and I hit some mean-ass golf balls next door.
Jan 24CBs Gallery, NYC: OK, were on the road! Nowwere home! Confusing, but what the f***? So were not quite returning heroes, at least not just yetHow many peeps can one shout out to at this juncture? Ali and the JSM crew, Kyle and Josh and the Warconvicts, all sorts of wishers-well turned out for the loudest band to ever shake the walls directly south of NYCs formerly greatest. I rocked my hat off, literally.
Jan 26Bloomfield Caf, Montclair NJ: How do you handle all-ages shows? Bud in an A&W can of course! Cold as balls night but a hot crowd. So nice to play on an old school downtown strip that isnt crawling with shambling zombies. Ah, shambling zombiesThe SmashUps truest friends. Rock and roll Mom #1 comes thru with assorted baked treats/I throw away remaining treats prematurely/Ant is irked. Irked. Oh, and of course the van wouldnt startthanks to anonymous dudes who tried to jump us (with cables that is) but finally AA came to our rescue. After 12 simple steps and a few confessional phone calls, we were on our way home. Should have called AAA probably, right?
Jan 28The Space, Springfield VA: You know youve made it when you play Electronic Drive baby! I got to guest on Race The Suns finale (Their ICARUS songoddly enough, we open with an ICARUS song. Serendipity and shit.) and we all got to be revealed to be green, sweaty swamp men as hideous fluorescent lights bathed us immediately following the show. Ew!
Jan 29The Sonar, Baltimore MD: Holy crab cakes this was funthanks to sound man for hooking up my in-ears, and thanks to anonymous girl in crowd who returned said in-ear receiver after it left my pocket inexplicably. Maybe the 10 beers know? I will make a note to ask them. We watched in horror as we helped Thin Dark Line trash Race The Suns van. Oh, the horror. Oh, the poop. Thanks to the annoying homeless a-hole who harassed us all nightman you do Baltimore proud. Anson, next time thru youre roadie-for-a-day.
Jan 30Sweet Carolines, Virginia Beach VA: WHOOOOOSH!!! Was that a MIG or an F-14? Better watch Top Gun again to check. Awesome show and crowdkudos to the kid who got the mic for half a song and proceeded to make me look bad. Ant executed a rare drum fill known as the triple-paddidle-snare-stand-snappypoo. Wish wed gotten footage. It was great to finally meet Elvis after all this time. Let me be the first to say he is alive, well, and fitter than ever.
Feb 1Jamestown Campground, Jamestown VA: Welcome to Williamsburg, please step out of the car and keep your hands out of your pockets! Oy, lets just say youre never gladder to have stopped drinking 4 hours prior to taking the wheel than when youre on the pitched Virginia roadside at 1:30am walking heel-to-toe toward officer Its Pat!s cruiser. But blowing a .000? Priceless. Brad Patton appears in the boat garage and all goes well. Next time, well stay long enough to see the sluts. Especially tight set, by the way. DIO!
Feb 2Grace Lutheran Church, Bradford PA: F*** yeah Lutherans! We just fit playing at churches, we just do. Awesome crowd and show, thanks to everybody---and we thought the Home of The Zippo neon sign was cool? The fans here know how to rock, and also how to polish off a dented case of Rockstar Energy Drink like feral marmosets. Note to young man having randy fun with our lightsaberthis IS a chuch, son. Way cool motel, David Lynch would be proudand horrified!
Feb 3Sacred Grounds, Fallsington PA: Terrific venue and kidsI got to deflower a first-time headbanger, as well as greet both a Smiths The Queen is Dead t-shirt wearer andANDa DIO back patch wearing motherf***er! Watch for the pic of that one. Thanks to the guy in charge who not only runs a tight show, but sings a mean John Prine as well. How did all you guys know the lyrics is what Im confused about. Still, awesome! Thanks for the pizza. MMMM.
Feb 4The Orange Street, Akron OH: Q: Are We Not Men? A: We AreThe SmashUp. Well you guys gave us a pick-me-up from our sickly doldrums and thanks to the stage pole, I got to finally hump something. Thanks to our headless plastic female sweatshirt dummy, Vin did too. Goodbye for now to Race The SunBrian, you will make it to the WWE one day I know. Ive seen several ladies on that you could probably take. Maenzaland!
The SmashUp TOUR BLOG 5.1
2/5The Creepy Crawl, St. Louis MO: St. Louis is for haters! But luckily none were present, just a great crowdvery hot night, lots of sweat. We teamed up with our labelmates ADAIR and they proceeded to blow the crowd away. We then proceeded to make off with their money. Ha! Gotcha! Dont you guys love our traditional first-night-of-tour tradition of money stealing? Oh, The Deftones are gonna love that. And Im glad that picture of my penis didnt come out. Im just glad about it.
2/6The Music House, Fayetteville AR: The crowd was amazing for this one. No really, I mean that, both of you. You were both equally amazing. We managed to find this place tucked behind the Chinese take out joint. Turned out to be a fun show and a good bonding moment. Mapquest? Thy name is deceit. Thanks to sound guy for hooking me up with in-earssweet!
2/8Bricktown Ballroom, Oklahoma City OK: Very cool new venueand we mean new, as we shook the rafters until sawdust filled the air like a sexy sawdust hazeand fun show. Jumping the barrier to remove the sunglasses of the girl who was wearing sunglasses indoors (and at night) was a rush. Great ribs next door by the by, you should really get on down there and try the pork.
2/11The Underground, Lake Havasu City AZ: Crazy in AZ! Cool venue when the sound man is in the Voodoo Glow Skulls!! Very windy day and we jumped ADAIR at the In-and-Out burger. Jumped em! OK, we just jumped Sid. Jumped em! Thanks to cool fans who bought hats and look right fetching in em.
2/12The Alley, Fullerton CA: Were going back to Cali. No, were here! We always enjoy this place, and tonight was no exception. My intentional-looking jump-off-the-stage-and-explode-a-water-bottle-all-over-people move was, in fact, unintentional. Or was it? Vin didnt get to impersonate a Creed video, but did get to again remind young Fullertonians that Rugs, not drugs is the only way to go.
2/13The Knitting Factory, Hollywood CA: Great finish to our swing with ADAIR, once we actually figured out which room we were playing in, the show went off great. Rich was great. Actually, each note he played possessed a certain lan that one might classify as ebullient. Effervescent, even. Perhaps. And of course, Pinheads represent! Thank you Rodwin for coming, and of course Guc for the Mexican eats. Hey, I didnt pass out in the van this time playing here. Good for me.
TASTE OF CHAOS!
2/16San Diego Sports Arena, San Diego CA: Holy Flurking Shnit! What can we say that hasnt already been said? Oh lots and lots. I got to give the TOC TV crew a tour of our van right off the bat but I still havent seen the footage. They say I came off buff but succulent. The MySpace stage was great from night 1 and we found ourselves going from an audience of 4 last week to an audience of 5,000+! You just know youre on the right track when they give you towels. Man, thats a perk.
2/17Mesa Amphitheatre, Mesa AZ: Great outdoor show! You want a 15 minute set? Well give you a 15 minute set! YOU GOT IT BUDDY! YOU GOT THE SET! We really packed in a lot to those 900 seconds of gloryreally starting to appreciate the 50-foot python-like mic cord I got. I can get closerclosercloser, to all of you. And seeing lyrics being sung in the crowd is always a thrill. Playing after AS I LAY DYING? I must say that takes balls and by God we got em.
2/18County Coliseum, El Paso TX: Whats up El Paso, whats up? Chilly day in the border town we all know and lovebiggest crowd yet, andwe opened for Deftones! Yep, last slot of the night before em, so full friggin house. Nerves? Nothing that confidence, 4 beers, guts, and 6 beers cant calm. Seriously though, that is what happened. Great hanging with everyone at merch. Merch. Merch. We say that word to much. Too. Much. Merch.
2/20Nokia Theater, Dallas TX: Great setup, very cool theaterI deftly knocked over ADAIRs merch rack with a precision-guided duct tape missile. But, they put it back up. Next timethere IS no tomorrow. Great meeting everybody after the showthanks for making it all the way up to our WARCON merch tent! Theres that word again. Damn.
2/21Freeman Coliseum, San Antonio TX: Very hot and amazing showthey say everything is bigger in Texas and a night like this proves it! On my nightly trip to the crowd barriers I was mauled in a lovingly molesting manner (maybe button-flys are a bad call) which inspired me to remove the shirt and toss it crowdward. Either someone didnt much appreciate a soaking wet RACE THE SUN shirt size S, or they were quite polite. Either way, got it back. BUTthe hatmy #1 main axe of a hat featuring my prized Skully pinthat I got back in awesome form. When you start singing gimme the hat/gimme the hat into the mic, you know you are really hoping for its return. Thanks a million again, and enjoy the shirt! Steal then return my stuff, win swag!
2/22Verizon Wireless, Houston TX: Houston! A hot one! Small but very intense venuewe chilled with everybody on the line before doors then blew the roof off the place like the violent animals we are. Got to hang with STORY OF THE YEAR who are very cool and who like to challenge people to do the darndest things for cash. And s*** those guys can skateboard! Pool battle with Kevin Lyman post-show ended in defeat, but we did eat pizza with GREELEY ESTATES so the night wasnt a total loss.
2/24Metro Park, Jacksonville FL: The world witnesses the birth of SMASHY! Our little green puppet companion becomes a TV star 9 minutes after birth, as we meet FUSE for our interview on STEVENS UNTITLED ROCK SHOW! Total blast to hang with these guys and apparently the puppet was all the rage. I take no credit, he just lives on my hand, does what he pleases. Show was great and outdoors, the FL crowd was incredible! Great night hanging at the tent and then at the tour busses into the wee hours! These guys had a truck with 12 kegs in it and we narrowed it down to about 8 Id say. I cant divulge details of our party-with-the-big-boys of TOC night, but I will say that dousing your hoodie in liquor in an attempt to be set on fire is a silly, silly enterprise. My attempt to spark the AS I LAY DYING vs. ATREYU rumble failedbut mark my wordsby the end of this tour, were all gonna rumble! Who will emerge victorious? We want AMERICAN EYES in round 1.
2/25Tinker Field, Orlando FL: Its amazing how you can drink so damn much and thenjustsomehowdo it again!? Isnt it? Yeah. The crowd was flipping nuts tonight and more and more mouths mouthing our lyrics is a great sign of things to comeI will come to rely on you guys when I get fuzzy in certain moments. Maybe someone can do cue cards? We got off just before the rain came downbut it cleared up and our nightly merch table party was a blast. I know there are obviously doctored images on the internet of me wearing a pink brassiere over my shirt in order to boost CD sales, but I assure you those images are doctored. Obviously. Rich won the Drive The Golf Ball Thru the Circle in the Parking Lot Place contest. Then we ran.
2/26Pompano Beach Amphitheater, Pompano Beach FL: OBITUARY: SMASHY (2/23/06 2/26/06) In his short, 3-day life, SMASHY THE PUPPET COMPANION MADE ENTIRELY OF MERCH MERCH MERCH managed to squeeze more out of life than most do in a full lifetime. Who in a 3-day lifetimeone day of which was spent in a boxcan say they touched so many lives? Appeared so often on television? Who among us can truly say they were made entirely of merch? Smashy may be gone, but he will live on as a prize in the FUSE TV TASTE OF CHAOS contest. To whomever wins our one-of-a-kind little guy, I say this: Love him; care for him; he eats flesh. Kickass night for show, and thanks to all Pomponians who got chilly and are now sporting hot new TSU hoodies! Glenn chilled with Chino, I had Contempt, and the Amphitheatre crowd ruled the day. Sofia flat out rocks!
-------------------
2/28: Gwinnett Civic Center, Atlanta GA: Did you ever wonder what happens when you drink from 3pm to 1am 3 days in a row, doing shows daily and screaming your head off at the merch table? If you answered you kick major ass and gain vigor with each passing day!, you are not correct. We built shelves in the trailer (Git-R-Done Jonny!) so thats a good thing. Rough night for me but the beginning of getting back on track. It only takes one off night to refocus and ensure you taste the Chaos fully. Tastes like okra. Thanks GA for being GAreat.
3/1: Constant Convocation Center, Norfolk VA: An all-night drive afforded us the chance to arrive at the venue FIRST! We even got to go number 2 in one of the main stage bands dressing rooms before they were appointed as such. Whos was it? Thats between me and stall number 4. Awesome egg and cheese sandwiches across the street re-energized us and the show was fun. Dirty fun.
3/3: Continental Airlines Arena, East Rutherford NJ: Dear New Jersey: See, growing up as a kid in CT and going to my first big arena shows, we always considered the Meadowlands to be a New York venue. Heckfire, its close enough for the NY Giants, right? As a lead vocalist expected to give geographically accurate venue shout-outs, such border-town locations can prove to be a baffling gray area sublte enough to flummox a GPS-outfitted cartographer. All respect to the strong who survive from East Rutherford to Trenton, from Avalon to NetcongNew Jersey, show me your f***ing horns! Awesome to play the stage you saw Billy Joel play on when you were 12. Thanks to Bob and the Warcon crew for representingEmily rules the pit!
3/4: Tweeter Center, Camden NJ: Philly! New Jersey! Yep, got it right this timegood hang in lobby with all kids of new fans, friends, fellows and fillies. And filets. . . O FISH! Special thanks to Mike who made us look like non-rock stars (wheres my Mohawk?) and sold like a demon. A demon who will a.) Suck your soul b.) Eat your soul c.) Wash your Ass d.) All of the Above. (Answer: Come on, you know its always D) I finally cornered Chino and got my iPod back. Im pretty sure he thought Id have given him a proper beat-down if he hadnt. I wouldnt have.
3/6: Cumberland County Civic Center, Portland ME: Holy Bananas! Did we know Maine would rock like a rock lobster and roll like a lobster roll and blueberry like a. . .well. . .anyways, you get it. Insane crowd start to finish! I gotta love being begged to jump off the stage and pummel the crowd. A pummeling invite is so endearing. Note to fans: While a sincere gesture of heartfelt audience-to-musician affection, soiled Playtex are not an appropriate gift. Ew.
3/7: Paul E. Tsongas Arena, Lowell MA: Lowell, you guys put the silent T in Tsongas! Silent T for. . .Tsweet! (NOTE: T is silent) Did a Tsweet interview before show and afterwards I found myself on Atreyus bus filming a segment for their epic Guy falling unexpectedly and getting pulled out of frame while screaming experimental film compilation. Watch for it in theatres or more likely, straight-to-MPG. Come to think of it Lowell, you guys also take the ASS out of Massachusetts.
3/8: Connecticut Expo Center, Hartford CT: My home state! Also my favorite on-stage night yet on this tourgreat sound Grandpa! My shout-out to hometown Stamford went over great. Emily again rules the pit. Next time wear protective headgear! So on my way from van to venue late in the show I thought I was losing my mind as I hear Say It Aint So by Weezer blaring from the stage. Turns out it was The Deftones doing a spot-on cover. Nice job Chi. Noice, noice. Throice, Throice!
3/9: Mid-Hudson Civic Center, Poughkeepsie NY: Insane night! We were happy to return to the town Ive always been proud of knowing how to spell (yes, I had to ask for help 2 entries ago when we played in Massachusetts. Hell, I used to live there) The show was packed and exciting, our early slot was greeted with much sweat and blood. Then the floodgates opened. . .COME SEE! We met and gret dozens of friends old and new and sold out of limited edition full-length autographed CDs. With the exception of one nerd attack, the night went without a hitch. Just Surrender represent! Thanks for coming StevePoughkeepsie is definitely not for losers! Great to see the CEES and TOM! And who were those sexy guys hanging at our tablecould it have been Bob The Puppetmaster, Russ the Helmet-Cracker, Sal the TREOS lover? Who can say?
3/10: The Dome, Niagara Falls NY: Another all-night drive leads us to the most unusual stage setup of TOC yet. The Phantom-of-the-Opera perch opera box stage proved to be boldly awesome, and the catwalk-over-a-chasm proved to be irresistible to both myself, Ryan (Greeley Estates) and Chino (Deftones) alike. Hot and sweaty, this show was truly unique and fun. Fun is what its all about. Fuck-ass fun. Thanks to Timmy Hos for providing morning repast consisting of mainly maple-frosted donuts. Ally and the gang kicked ass again, awesome tinfoil trays of yummy pasta. Niagara, we fall for you.
3/11: Cobo Arena, Detroit MI: ALL RIGHT DETROIT . . .ARE YOU READY? YOU WANTED THE BEST, YOU GOT THE BEST! THE HOTTEST BAND IN THE LAND . . us! Yee-ha! Ahem, anyway, great to play Detroit Rock City for the first time. Man that monorail makes a scary sound when it comes by, kinda like robotic Lord of The Rings dragon guys. What are those guys called, the skeleton king dudes who stab Frodo on Weathertop? Shit I know this. Doomriders? No. I bet you anything Dustin from Thrice knows this. Seekers? Ill think of it like 3 days from now or something.
3/13: St. Charles County Family Arena, St. Louis MO: Family Arena!!! What the F***s UP!??? Ha, we are a family act at heart though. Hometown night for Story Of The Year and Adair, nice to see. Lump in the throat, all that jazz. Okay its all a bit of a blur for me but at one of these shows, I fell off the stage. 6 foot sheer drop. Every night theres some moment where you begin to lose balance but you have to play it off, you know, look badass and all that. Sometimes its a cord or something, but this night the monitors were just a bit slippery and once gravity took over, it was Air Watt. Of course, I popped back up and assaulted the front row. Only a rug burn scrape somehow, but my trusty watchband snapped in half. I think it saved my life.
3/14: UIC Pavilion, Chicago IL: Another freezing night! Kevin Lyman popped his head in, hes been away from the tour for a bit but is returning soon. Didnt get a chance to pitch him my idea for a summer music and lifestyle tour, possibly sponsored by an alternative footwear company. Roos Tour 07 is what I call it. I missed the after party, but Devo found Ants phone and Dominos delivers at 4am, FYI. Wish wed seen Wacker drive! Always wanted to do 115 down that Bad Larry.
3/15: Wolstein Center @ CSU, Cleveland OH: Cleveland Rocks! Hell yeah it does. Rust and BHAS in The Complex! Ohio fans always rule and tonight was no exception. The immaculate birth of SMASHY DEUCE was both tender and exhilarating, uplifting and humbling. Not to mention green and packed with pep! After eating lock after lock of human hair, a little puppet companion tends to get all tuckered out. night Smashy.
3/16: Toledo Sports Arena, Toledo OH: Holy Toledo. Yep, said that on the mic, couldnt help it. Alex from Atreyu did too so dont complain to me. Talk to him why dont you. Lots of hardy fans waiting outside in the wicked cold. . .luckily for us they came in and bought Icarus Hoodies! Thanks guys. Special thanks to several kickass Ohio fans who posted really good up-front pix from these 3 shows, well get them on the new TheSmashUp.com very soon. Farewell for now Funeral For A Friend. Dont take a whole year off, well miss you! Thanks Matt for the shoutouts and more than anything, the free T-shirt.
3/17: Hara Arena, Dayton OH: Happy St. Patricks Day! Time for the wearin of the green . . . Hand puppet that is! Smashy had a bang-up night, getting it on with bitches left and right. Man that guy gets around. Pelican and Millionaire came on board today, awesome to finally meet those guys and talk waffles and fish. Amazing night hanging with Daytonians at the merch table all nightthat green beer really gets you f***ers loose and nuts. Sorry to leave Ohio to be honest. Not that the rest of what I write is dishonest mind you. Our being sorry to leave Ohio is just . . honester.
3/18: The Eagles Club, Milwaukee WI: Holy haunted venues! We got a full stage and light show which was pretty much rad. Having actual room to flail about led to a better show and even more total cablefuck. We are a living commercial for wireless. Sponsorships anybody? Going once. Heard the basement had a haunted pool, never saw it but the Confesh and Devo definitely checked it out. Hey, has anyone seen either of them? No? Huh.
3/19: St. Paul, MN: Our tourbook is ripped and I cant recall the name of the venue here. St. Dome? Paul Palace? Fun to say the least, and Im saying the least. Was hoping The Time might appear during our set, or at least Jerome with a mirror for me to check my do in. Didnt happen. On the way out of town got pulled over for slight swerving caused by our attempts to pump up the Prince on the iPod whilst driving. but officer, cant you see U Got the Look, U Got the Hook? U Sho nuff do B Cookin in my book. So no ticket, right? I think we should have purified ourselves in the waters of Lake Minnetonka, but I got outvoted.
3/21: Civic Memorial Auditorium, Fargo ND: The Prowler may need a jump but Fargo fans are already fired up and raging! We got our hang on with everybody again out in the lobby. That was where the party was at! Ran into a guy who was going to be arrested the next day for getting a DUI while on parole, and saw 2 kids get led away in cuffs by undercover guys. Could little Fargo really be a crime infested wasteland? Nah, its lovely. 2 bad apples aint spoiling the party, no way. Amazing crowd!!
3/22: Pershing Auditorium, Lincoln NB: Ok, so my plan to pronounce the silent L in Lincoln (that would be the 2nd L, naturally) didnt exactly happen. I polled the kids and the word was no. The word was ON LIKE DONKEY KONG however for the apocalyptic snowball fight which occurred outside the venue for the better part of an hour. I hurled the iced projectile of a lifetime at, of all people, big John the second stage manager. Lets just say thats a guy you dont want on your bad side. Even on your good side, hes a little scary. But yet; cuddly. Even perhaps; spoonable. At any rate, I could hear the slap of snow on skin from 200 feet away and I got what was coming to me later. The old smash-a-snowball-down-your-shirt-so-your-underpants-get-a-little-bit-wet trick. Classic revenge, served cold and icy. Another great night meeting way cool and insane fans out in the lobby.
3/23: Kemper Arena, Kansas City MO: Kansas City! Whats up Kansas City! Put your hands in the air like you care not Kansas City! Yeah I must say its got a ring to it. Right up there with Cleveland on the Frontman Shout-out Chart o Fame. More crazy fans right from the get go tonight. Vin and I did an interview for GameTap.com reminiscing about among other things, Joust. Ah Joust, so many memories. I went from falling off the stage to falling INTO the stage tonight. Whats worse, my mic died so we got to do half of Youre Never Going To Kill Us Pelican-style: No vocals! No fun without the 50-footer cable. Another wireless infomercial night. Thanks to PEACHES and Jairo!
3/25: Fillmore Auditorium, Denver CO: OK this was a crazy night. One crazy Summer, sorta like that. Did you see that? We arrived in high altitude to find our Individual Serving Raisin Bran Crunch Powl Paks slightly distended. Pretty cool, if youre a middle school science teacher with a veiny nose and dandruff. Cool side-stage setup, fun to jump down to crowd level and manhandle people eye to eye, face to face. See? Im no God. Im like you. We attempted to chase the Pelican out of town but its wings proved too speedy for successful pursuit. Next time, white-plumed aquatic aviator!

Their sound is, just as the Billboard descrip states,
something of a mixture of many great bands, AFI,
Coheed, Metallica, NOFX (def), almost even Floging
Molly in there. But why compare, these guys are their
own great band, A enjoying the unique but familiar
sounds you guys are pumping out, keep rocking. -rob
