i wanted to write a quick note on here so everyone would know what you are getting when you purchase (hint hint) my new cd.
i started writing the demos for this cd last year, and i decided that i wanted this record to be a motown record. i wanted it to be real, and full of soul, and like nothing i'd ever done before., i wanted real instruments over programming, and back up singers instead of auto tune. I set out to make a record of all the good moments, like the songs you hear in the movies where they just wrapped it up with a happy ending.. those are always the songs i wanted to make/
not everyone was feeling this idea of mine but i decided i wanted to
do what made me happy, and make the music i wanted to make.
so in March i went to LA and spent a month recording with my now good friend and amazing producer, Noah Shain. he really helped me out with the making of this record. he told me that this was the record he'd been waiting to make, and i couldn't have done it without him. we recorded it to actual analog tape, even using the same apex tape machine used in the original Motown Records recording studios. in other words, it’s real.
we had live musicians come in and play all the parts i had written, live strings, live horns, live percussion... we even had some legit soul diva back-up singers come in.. i asked my friend Lights to come in to lend her voice to the verse on "Used to be sweet"... and had a children's choir sing along with me on "domino".
it was a great experience, and i'm really proud of it. for me, it's the best thing i've ever done musically, and i'm excited to share it with all of you. putting myself aside and letting other people play my songs during the recording process.. it was the most rewarding experience i've ever had.
i wanted to take a chance. i wanted to take a risk on this record, i want to challenge people. i know you guys are growing up and so am i. i think this music is more mature than what ive done in the past. im proud of it. i feel like it’s a special record. I feel like it has the potential to really move people to make people feel good about situations in their lives. its a soul record. i wanted an authentic sound with a new style...
more than anything i want you to hear the music. but knowing how much heart and hard work goes into this album, i hope u can spend the $10 at the store or on iTunes .. come out to a show... tell your friends.. whatever you can to help support it and let me know you're listening.
night & day comes out aug 17th.
i hope you will take this chance with me :)

PS.
i know how different it is from my old cd, one full year. OFY is probabyl why a lot of you have been supporting me all these years. so i'm also including bonus songs with each copy of Night & Day. I call these the Night versions. I worked Skrillex (Sonny Moore, you may know him From First to Last) and Cory Killdruff of Ocelot (he co-produced OFY) to create "electro" versions of 8 songs from Night and Day... 19 songs in total giving you something different in addition to the motown jams.
