In its 6 year span Playground Slap concocted a strange groove, a Jamulian brew of peculiar funk. Rock with many nods to psychedelia, rap and jazz, with sprinkles of country and latin sway, brooding songs with catchy sounds aloft a swingingly stiff, often atonal mess of introspection and parody. These intrepid self-taught new funking wave brothers, delivered a unique version of romanticismic bounce to eager, strained ears in the San Diego area. During their tenure, 1982 to 1988, they shared the stage with bands like Midnight Oil, Fishbone, Ministry, Camper Van Beethoven, Adrian Belew's The Bears and many others.
The enclosed CD features Slap songs reinterpreted by two of the original members, reunited funk brothers Marcelo Radulovich and David Ybarra, who with walking sticks and a greying sound infuse the tunes with some 20 years of living, the result being a sweetly sour musical smorgasbord to fill the aural bellies of demanding sonic gluttons. The talents of guests Mike Keneally and Bill Ray on various tunes bring new blood, and the contributions from Ray DeZonia and Mike Addis (of the original brood) have added a healthy dose of personality.
With the addition of Bill Ray (Tubby, Ike Turner) on drums, and Ray DeZonia re-assuming the role of synthesist, this new version of The Playground Slap is currently rehearsing the material with plans to begin performing in support of the CD in early 2007.
