The Overthrow is a bloody rockin power trio bursting out of the Pittsburgh area with a vengence. At once channeling the heavy riffs and melodicism of 90s alternative, the unrefined trashiness of 70s punk, and the sonic stew of today's modern rock; this is a band that pays tribute to the past while looking ahead to the future. Their wide spanning taste gives The Overthrow a hefty pallete to paint their musical vision with, one which they fully use.
The band originally formed with brothers Kalin (vocals/guitar) and Braden McDannell (drums/vocals) somewhere in the early 2000s. Raised in rural western Pennsylvania, the duo found their start when they both picked up the guitar as young teenagers. They spent several years in the garage honing their skills until their respective strengths revealed themselves. Kalin found his forte in singing and penning lyrics, while Braden developed his instrumental skills, both on the guitar and on some newly acquired drums. Once becoming able players, they decided to start a band for themselves. It wasn't easy at first. Assorted members would come and go over those intial years, with the brothers remaining the only constant in their band. As their lineup shifted around them, Kalin and Braden spent all their free time writing songs and jamming even when there was no one else to jam with.
The McDannell boys eventually reached college age and went off to school to meet a wide array of new people. Not least of these new faces was Chris Scianna, a Philadelphian who had come to the Pittsburgh area for the same educational purpose. Of course in travels, Chris packed his bass guitar as well as textbooks. The aspiring bassman first met Kalin in a shared English class. It was actually their professor who suggested they hook up to form a band. Through that suggestion, Chris got together with the two brothers and quickly became the permanent bassist for The Overthrow.
Since then, the trio has dedicated themselves to preparing The Overthrow for their debut to the masses.
Meet Braden, the one-hundred percent half-irish madman. Everyone knows he can pull together a mean car bomb (and drink one too), but when he's not killing English folk for the IRA, he plays drums for the aptly named band The Overthrow. Braden is the OT's power source, pulverizing the drums as if they were Queen Elizabeth herself. He plays the kit like every beat is his last, driving the band into oblivion with sheer force and brutality. Yet mindless skins monster he is not, as Braden's occassional guitar work and songwriting contributions truly give the Overthrow some of it's best qualities. He is a multifaceted musician and a nice guy in real life, unless you're English.
Meet Kalin: the leader, the voice, the hair. Like so many before him, Kalin takes on the world with a guitar in hand and song in heart. However, no one in the history of music has ever quite brought it on like this guy does. His guitarisms can at once sooth your soul and cause you to shit your pants. His lyrics are perceptive, clever and smart, all delivered with a voice truer than truth itself. Yes, Kalin is pretty awesome, but he doesn't let it get to his head. While he enjoys kicking bums and laughing at the less fortunate; he is a very humble and approachable man. However, Kalin is still the bane of every barber's existence.
Meet Chris: a man who has a prison market value higher than that of metal underwear. Thankfully a free man, Chris lends his talents to the Overthrow as their bass player extrordinaire. While his bandmates may define the rhythm and the melody of a song, Chris is the counterpoint, the X-factor and the 4th dimension all wrapped up into one tight package. His basslines can lay low like a snake, only to jump up and literally bite your testes off an instant later. He is the glue that holds it together and the depth that makes it rock. In addition, Chris adds a flair and sexiness to the band's image that just can't be bought, at least not in Canada.
