There’s so much going on at South By Southwest at any given moment that sometimes it’s easy to miss the little things. We made it a point to keep our eyes peeled for one of the most consistently entertaining (and sometimes cringe-worthy) party of the week–outrageous tattoos. Many are beautiful, some funny, some topical and we tried to get a range, from the classic ‘Mom’ to the more abstract (scissors?).

South By Southwest isn’t just a great place to discover new music, or catch an old favorite–it’s also one of the most exciting people watching experiences you can ever have. Between the fashion, the Texas heat, and the pure weirdness of it all, everything and everyone takes on a somewhat magical sheen. On the Ground at South By Southwest

With rainy days forecast for the week, it looked like this year's South By might be a bit of a slog. Sunny skies and hot days have been the reality, however, and so this year's festivities have been just as jam-packed as a SXSW should be. We've also had the great pleasure of seeing a number of our most-anticipated bands already, meaning things can only go up from here. Highlights so far have included FIDLAR, Polica and Superhumanoids, three of our most-anticipated bands (it's always nice to be right, isn't it), with awesome sets also coming from Santigold and Oberhofer. South By Southwest Packing List: Essential Items for a Crazy Week

SXSW: It's hot, it's loud, there are a million things you want to see but not enough hours in the day to do them. In a whirlwind week, it's the little things that can really make or break your experience. This is why we decided to join forces with some our bands playing the PV House to list the items we know we packed in our suitcases. Some of the advice is more practical, some we hope is a joke (ahem, Superhumanoids), but with many years of collective South By-ing under our belts, you'd be advised to heed at least some of our wisdom.

PureVolume’s Bands to Watch at SXSW

PureVolume will be invading Austin on Monday, and we couldn’t be more excited. Not only will we be hosting the PureVolume House and all of the incredible shows taking place at all hours within it, but we’ll also be roaming the streets checking out some of the bands that have been electrifying our headphones over the past couple of months (and hopefully discovering some things we don’t even know about yet). Of course we are most excited to see the bands playing at our own party on Saturday night, but there are also a whole mess of other bands we can’t wait to see. The 2012 PureVolume House Presented by iHeartRadio is Here!

At long last, the 2012 line-up for The PureVolume House Presented by iHeartRadio at SXSW has arrived! We’ll be taking over 2nd and Trinity in Austin from March 11th to the 17th. With parties curated by Stereogum, Idolator, Absolute Punk, PureVolume and more, the House will be your one stop shop to see great bands, hang with friends, and have some free drinks basically any time of the day or night.

With performances from LIGHTS, Screaming Females, Shearwater, Zambri, Shiny Toy Guns, Motion City Soundtrack, Bear in Heaven, Princeton and much more, you won’t want to miss a single thing. Bands that Broke After Playing the PureVolume House

From Skrillex, back when he was simply known as DJ Skrill, to Young the Giant when they were The Jakes, and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, the PureVolume House has been a showcase for some of the biggest bands of the past five years. With yet another stacked lineup this year, we thought it would be nice to take a look back at some of the bands that have played the house, and to take a little peek into where they are now, before you start making bets on who is going to blow up in 2012.

Skrillex

Year He Played the House: 2009

Where Are They Now: Just this month, Skrillex was awarded three Grammy awards. If that’s not “making it” we don’t know what is.

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros

Year They Played the House: 2009

Where Are They Now: You can hear Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros’ breakout single “Home” everywhere from the radio to sound tracking your favorite TV shows. Their second single “Janglin” was featured in a commercial for the 2011 Ford Fiesta, and the debut album reached #76 on Billboard’s Hot 100. The band’s second record is slated for release on May 29, 2012.

The Jakes/Young the Giant

Year They Played the House: 2009

Where Are They Now: Following their performance, The Jakes signed to Roadrunner Records, and announced that they would be changing their name to Young the Giant. Their eponymous debut record sent them skyrocketing into the mainstream, which festival dates, tours and a Billboard Alternative top 5 single.

All Time Low

Year They Played the House: 2008

Where Are They Now: All Time Low weren’t small potatoes when they played the House in 2009, but it wasn’t until the following summer that they reached mainstream success in a way only few of their fellow pop punk bands have. Their third studio album, Nothing Personal, debuted at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100, and remains the band’s highest charting album to date.

Two Door Cinema Club

Year They Played the House: CMJ 2010

Where Are They Now: These Irish rockers took the US by storm the year that they played the PureVolume House at the CMJ Music Marathon in New York. Their debut album had dropped the previous spring, in the months since they played the house the band has been touring the biggest festivals and venues in the world.

For Fans of: The Killers, The Fray, Snow Patrol

Playing: Saturday March 17th (ok, technically Sunday Morning)

What are you most excited for on your first trip to South By Southwest: Remembering what the sun looks like. Getting to grips with Texas culture, catching lots of bands I haven’t seen, and playing shows everyday.

What’s been your biggest accomplishment as a band so far?: Learning the art of focus. It’s easy to sit around patting yourself on the back for something you already did or to worry about the future and things that haven’t happened. We try just to focus on nailing what’s in front of us.

What’s on the horizon after Austin?: More US dates. My memory is poor but from what my mind is telling me we’re heading to the west coast and not leaving the states until the end of March when we head back to Europe for a headline tour.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve gotten to prepare for South By so far?: Should we have received advice? Nobody has given us any advice — we’re going in blind.

What’s the most important thing you’re packing in your suitcase?: Paracetamol and sunglasses.
