The Cretins arose primarily from the ashes of seminal Danbury rock band The Pelicans and originally consisted of Jon Fisher on lead vocals, Nick "The Hung Man" LeBalbo on guitar, ed markel on drums and Jon's brother Ben as a temporary bassist. After only their second practice, they played their first show at the Newtown Teen Center in March 2004, and it was determined that Ben would stick around as bassist for the time being. After a few shows, the band went on hiatus for several months. The Cretins would soon resume business as usual (minus Nick at this point), however, beginning by playing and shutting down a show at a New Fairfield firehouse in January 2005. A hilight of the next few months was a show at the Webster Underground in May 2005 that would be recorded and released as a live album, and which featured recording quality (as well as musicianship) far superior to anything the band had produced up to that point. The Cretins would play with friends Far From Finished on December 23, 2005, with Zack Foster of the Ultrasounds standing in as backing guitarist. Frustrated with Foster's less-than-spectacular performance, ed would end the show by diving off the drumset and tackling him to the ground (although he later presented Foster with an oversized Heineken keg can). Four days later, on December 27, markel and Fisher stopped at a McDonald's for food. Drummer ed markel wanted to get two cheeseburgers, but Fisher told him they were too low on money and that he could only get one. Tensions started to rise, and the two came close to exchanging blows. They decided, however, to focus their attention on more important matters. The new year would bring about yet another lineup change, with ed's switch to guitar and vocals and the recruitment of drummer Adam Galanski (formerly of the now defunct Suburban Youth). Expect big things from the Cretins in the spring and summer of 2006, including a full-length release and more shows than you can shake LeBalbo's dick at. The Cretins are, indeed, "Moving Forward."
