Members: Wendell, Matthew, Benjamin, Coleene, Timothy, and Philip
The Birdsongs are a national recording Christian Alternative Pop/ Rock band from Tennessee that is gaining tremendous attention in the USA and Canada. The Birdsongs are a six piece comprised of brothers, sisters, and their father.
The Birdsongs current (and first) radio single "Pieces (Hold On)", written by lead singer/guitarist Benjamin Birdsong and produced by Dove Award winning producer Travis Wyrick (The Letter Black, P.O.D., Disciple, Pillar, Toby Mac), recently debuted at 24 on the Billboard BDS National Christian Rock Airplay Chart in March, 2010. This song was stirred by a devastating tragedy. "One night, I wrote down what I'd say if I had one chance to speak to everyone on earth" reflects Benjamin, "we've received so many stories on how God is using this song to change lives all over the world".
Benjamin Birdsong plays guitar and holds down the lead vocal responsibilities, Matthew Birdsong is on the bass and throws a banjo riff in from time to time, Timothy Birdsong pounds on the keys and occasionally a guitar, Philip Birdsong lends his rock-solid drumming and reckless abandon to the mix, Coleene Birdsong adds her vocal and acoustic guitar talents, and Wendell Birdsong holds it all together on guitar.
Music has been a huge part of the Birdsong family's life for more than 15 years. After giving away their belongings and selling their home in Seattle, WA., the Birdsong family bought an RV and began their journey across North America. "We started playing music together as a family just for fun back when I was nine" says Benjamin "It started in our living room, moved to retirement communities, churchesâ¦I never dreamed God would allow us do this on such a large scale."
At a much younger age they called themselves the Birdsong Family, a Bluegrass/Southern Gospel band. They were accepted by many prestigious venues such as Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, TN., Silver Dollar City in Branson, MO., they appeared on Gospel Music Television, and were heard on numerous radio interviews and at concerts all over the USA and Canada. As they matured musically and began experimenting with songwriting, they found a sound that they felt formed a perfect marriage with their message.
In 2008, The Birdsongs, armed with a new name, songs they were passionate about, and a new heart to reach the lost and hurting, built a recording studio in their basement and began recording anthems for a searching generation, songs of hope, reminders of grace and love, and songs that offer a hurting world the only reason to live.
Today the Birdsong's call East Tennessee home. The band and family, who always tour together, also coordinates their own booking, sound, recording, duplication, promotion, and co-management responsibilities. "Everyone in the family has their own individual strengths and responsibilities" adds Coleene. Their die-hard fan base is growing with every show. They now play over 130 dates per year. "I think we're different because of how much time we spend getting to know and forming relationships with our fans." Philip elaborates, "One of the best parts of doing what we do is meeting so many amazing people!"
In 2010, the Birdsongs are breaking new ground, sending out their second radio single, playing shows with Red, Run Kid Run, Fireflight, Children 18:3, Since October, This Beautiful Republic, Everyday Sunday, The Fold, The Newsboys, Remedy Drive, Me In Motion, After Edmund, Echoing Angels, Rush of Fools, and many other incredible artists.
The Birdsongs are in the early stages of writing a new album. "All of the experiences, stories, and people we've met have shaped what we want to say with our music" Says Benjamin, the principal songwriter. "Putting those ideas and stories into songs is an important process. I want people to feel like these songs are written just for them, because they are."
