Few bands in german music history have been anticipated with such high expectations by the media, hopes of mainstream compatibility and industry pressure as Sub7even.
A mortgage like that typically means considerable baggage for its owner - not so in the case of this band from Dortmund.
In 1999, keyboarder Christian Wolff, guitarists Sven Fischer and Spiros Eftimiadis, as well as the latters brother Christos (drums) split from Ruhrpott-Metallers RAGE to pursue alternative paths.
With their young frontman Daniel Wirtz in tow they form Sub7even the same year and move on to write and produce new material in Mnsters Principal Studios; owned by Jrg Umbreit.
Without hesitation Munichs Major BMG signs the fivesome on the spot.
The first release is in the stores in October 2000, self-titled `Sub7even`.On their debut the band manages to combine opulent melodies and a rock backing, side by side with emotional ballads that seem to be made for european radio, thus succeeding as a hit record. `Sub7even` shifts 60.000 units, its first single `Weatherman` stays in the Media Control Charts for 20 weeks. The video goes to heavy rotation in all major TV music programmes. The heavier follow-up `Wicked` achieves similar success.
With a 100 gigs plus in 2001 the five guys fill venues internationally and awestruck audiences night after night with their energetic, powerful performance. Be it smaller sized venues or the countless big european Open Airs such as Bizzare Festival, Taubertal or Rock am Ring/ Rock im Park, the peers reaction to the band is always equally overwhelmed.
Though playing all throughout 2001 Sub7even record their second album in the beginning of 2002. Just like on the debut there are radio hits like `Free your Mind` , coupled with powerful heavy rock and emotionally charged ballads; again recorded at Principal Studios.
In spring 2002 the most expensive and daring video in the bands history yet for the title track `Free your Mind` is being shot in the streets of L.A.. Its a pre-release as a teaser for the album.
In Sub7evens far rockier version of the En Vogue hit singer Daniel shares vocal duties with the very 3 En Vogue ladies who wrote pop history with this classic. With the support of the ever increasing fan-base of Sub7even the video clip featuring En Vogue themselves achieves power rotation on MTV and occupies number 1 of the Voting Show MTV Select ` for weeks. The single does the same in the Top 50.
The print media who have always projected the band a great future seem to have been right in their thinking, the label counting their cash and the band looks set to roll along the river of mainstream safe and comfortably.
However, instead of following that path the band decide to break away from the tedious Radiorock of Central Europe they never felt happy with and tour Germany, Switzerland and Austria with controversial, polarizing BOEHSE ONKELZ, seducing BOs difficult audience of 15.000 every night with their idea of Rock`n`Roll. They continue to reach new crowds as well as satisfying their loyal fan-base.
The band never look back, increasing their following every time they play but soon experience that credibility has its prize - the mainstream TV music programmes and radio stations deny them spins and rotation on the grounds of the controversy surrounding their new mentors the BOEHSE ONKELZ. Most promotors dont support this hipocrit wanna-be-political correctness and continue to book Sub7even with enthusiasm. Again the venues range from small clubs to massive festivals, such as ALIVE in Belgium.
Sub7even continue to explore and write the music they want to play unyielding to the conservative german music industry, who has clearly for most parts lost touch with the consumers wants and needs and whats really going on in the music scene and youth culture.
In the beginning of 2003 the band is put through additional hardship by Chris Wolff and Sven Fischer leaving, but the remaining three decide to continue moving in a harder musical direction, consequently without keyboards and second guitar.
The new musical direction manifests itself also on the business side parting with the record label and management to gain complete independence from commercial pressure and prevent unwanted interference with their creative freedom.
In the summer of 2003 they play the old songs in the new sound on big festivals, in front - of amongst others - 25.000 punters in Ferropolis, Grfenhainichen and others in Germany and surrounding countries. Drummer Christos describes the new face of Sub7evens music suitably: `Were harder, tighter, more kick ass. I think were more real and ultimately the best weve ever been`.
In the late summer Bassplayer Kai Lemke joins after a 3 year stint in the USA with his band MUST who were signed to WIND UP of Creed, Drowning Pool and Evanessence fame. Having played countless support slots for the likes of Aerosmith, Kid Rock, Stone Temple Pilots and Godsmack, Kai is no stranger to playing large crowds.
Completing a classic rock line up with vocals, one guitar, drums and bass the band finally became a homogenous unit again, more than the sum of their individual parts. Now the band was ready to play with the big boys again.
Without a record deal, the foursome have been demoing and recording their new material in various studios finding it hard to find a producer to make them sound as rough and real as they sound live.
Finally, Stephan Weidner, the bassplayer and mastermind of BOEHSE ONKELZ offered to record in BOs own studio. Arguably the biggest Rock Star in Germany hed always helped Sub7even since getting to know each other on tour.He and the band produced and recorded lovechainsnrockets from November 2004 to February 2005.
These guys mean business!
With a strong and loyal fanbase in the beginning of 2005 the band found the subporter club (www.subporter.de), a privileged club of fans within the sub7fan.de club, which is 800 members plus strong and counting. The subporters know each other by their indicating T-shirts at gigs and follow the band whereever they play, even outside of their home country.
With the support of powerful friends and players and the fans the motto of the band is `More is More!.
A new line up, new material, new success. You dont have to be a clairvoyant to tell that Sub7even have a great future ahead of them!
