\\Script for History – News (1950s) + I love Lucy
Austin: Good afternoon this is Austin Lesperance reporting for channel 7 news. The date today is May 13, 1959; today’s program will be in tribute to the glorious decade that is just now coming to a close, the 1950s. Ever since WWII came to a victorious end, our country has seen a population, economic and technologic boom. Yes this has been a time of growth. With one war ending, another was beginning, the Cold War. With the constant threat of a Nuclear War hanging above our heads it was hard for most people to go about their lives in a regular fashion but Canada pulled through famously. Suburban sprawls have occurred everywhere to accommodate the explosive population which can only be described as a baby Boom! With the new generation rolling in we have also experienced a type of war over here - one that is between teenagers, and their parents. The new age of Rock and Roll has influenced the children with these role models such as Elvis Presley being their guides. This "rockabilly" revolution has such a large following that I would not be surprised if we had a full scale Social Revolution on the horizon but that's just me. Now let’s turn this over to Sarah Harris for a report on Science and Technology in the past decade.
Sarah: Thank you Austin. Well I’m here to tell you all about the scientific and technologic advances we’ve made is the past decade or so. Some of these you may be familiar with and some you may not. One of the greatest discoveries has to be penicillin being synthesized. Streptomycin is making tuberculosis a thing of the past. A miracle drug has just recently been discovered that cures all diphtheria, polio, and whopping cough. But let’s not forget about the original vaccine for polio that was created back in 1953. The first aorta transplant has been preformed and someone was actually revived using an electric shock. How weird is that?! As for all of you pregnant women out there, there is a new test called an ultrasound that lets you actually see your baby while its still inside of you! And we can’t forget about the T.V becoming a house hold item, otherwise, how would any of you be seeing me right now? The things they come up with now a days. Back to you Austin.
Austin- An now we’ll go over to Nicole Coenraad who is reporting live from the Hockey playoffs of the year. Let’s see how our Canadian team is doing. Nicole.
Nicole-Hey Austin! Wow this game is crazy. Well it seems Rocket Rickard as they call him has just scored another goal! Will this be the 5th cup for the team? Oh I think it will, look at him go! Wow Austin this game is getting intense. There are 3 more seconds left in this game. He Shoots He Scores! (Waits for cheers) The Canadian Team has just won their 5th cup in a row thanks to Rocket Richard. This will definitely go down in history; this is the first time this has ever happened! this is crazy 50 goals in just one season!
Thank goodness he’s off of being suspended because I don’t think the team would have made it this far without him. He is such a pure goal scorer, this crowd is spectacular.
Sarah: Do you have any news on what it happening at the Olympics?
Nicole: (Holds ear piece) Oh wait yes; I just got news from Anne. It seems that in the Olympics we were awarded 3 bronzes for Irene McDonald’s diving. And 2 gold medals for men’s shooting. This is truly amazing.
Sarah: Nicole, have you talked to any of the players?
Nicole: Yes I have right before the game. I talked to Willy Stevens. The goalie this season for Canada’s team. At first he seemed very nervous but as you can see he had no reason this team sure does make us Canadians proud, seeing as they are the only team that Canada has at the moment. I’m sure after this other athletes will be encouraged to play hockey. (Talks to crowd) Who wants some free (stuff)?! (Waits for yells) (Throws stuff into the crowd.)
Austin: Now Nicole, How about the Baseball? How’s that going?
Nicole: Very good in fact, Willie Mays was voted MVP once again. And in basketball news Cousy was voted MVP again. It must have been for that great defense he had on Bill Russell, at the Boston game.
Austin: That’s great news. At least we’re not like those Americans that bet on their basketball games.
Nicole: Ill say. That was one terrible scandal. Well back to you Austin.
Sarah: Thanks Nicole for that sports update. For those at home who are always on the lookout for a slim stiletto heel, or how about you gentlemen, always looking for that great gray flannel suit? You’re sure to be getting some back seat bingo in that passion-pit after a stern lesson or two from our reporter Jenny Duong.

Jen: Thanks Austin! I’m lovin’ the nest, by the way. Today in this Fashion Segment were looking at fashions of the past decade! Well let me start by saying that fashion of this decade sure has changed! All the way from simple and elegant to sassy glamour and cute. This decade sure is a change at heart, and it started from when Life Magazine dubbed Dior as “the new look” in 1947. On February 12, 1947 Christian Dior released his new look called “Bar” which revealed luxurious clothes with soft shoulders, wispy waists, and full flowing skirts. The new look graced Canadian’s after World War Two with the hourglass silhouette, and stayed a strong influence still to this day. Another influential silhouette released at about the same time as Dior’s new look was the hip and new swing coat by Jacques Fath. It was a great shape to cover up various shapes which were largely affected by the high post-war pregnancy rates. In 1954, Channel FINALLY reopened her fashion house and gave the world a look to contrast Dior. Her silhouette is straight down and veers away from the nipped in waist. These expensive suits are lined with lovely silk fabrics.
Austin: Now tuts, let me ask you something, if you want to look good NOW what do you females need to do?
Jen: If you want to look good in this new day and age, one must have a large selection of skirts on them. Any one of your skirts has to be supported with paper nylons! Not only do they create a gentle swish just like a round ball but they’re so comfy! Add a slim stiletto and glittery chains and complete the look with the Queen Elizabeth hair and put on your peachy makeup.
Austin: Jen it’s already May! The weather is getting warmer and more and more folks and teenagers are going to the beach. How can a cutie out there look good on the beach?
Jen: Hit the beach with a wide range of fabrics including lined cotton, stretch Latex, and elastic ruche waffle nylon. High cut legs are so in right now, but don’t let anyone catch you wearing a two piece or you’ll be considered fast! If you do wear a risqué two piece don’t leave the house without a skirt. Don’t forget not to dent your do with a floral bathing cap as well.
Austin: Gee Golly Jen; you sure need a classy chassis to fill those specifics. Well this all sounds good Jen but I just wish that I could take some tips from this segment (winks) what do you have for the menswear.
Jen: Oh Austin, of course I do! Men this decade toned it down, from wearing bright colours last decade to darker browns, blues, and grays. In 1953, the gray flannel suit began it’s reign and still is reigning over me I’ll tell you that. To accessorize the men’s new grey flannel, you can match it with a nice gray or black fedora hat. On a more casual note, the Ivy League look is also so in style right now. Match a cardigan with a white shirt and you’re the cat’s pajamas of the fifties! For an even more casual look turn to the on the range look or even dare to be different and wear the outrageous PINK, wild!
Sarah: Wow Jen, that’s so boss. What about those crazy teenagers, what can they do to be fashionable?
Jen: I’ll tell you Austin, since teenagers are all the rage this decade. Their rebellious ways help shape their look. To be a good looking teenager you have to sport the leather with a pair of Levi’s and Converse sneakers to bring it all together. Poodle skirts, ponytails, saddle shoes, penny loafers, and coloured sneakers are really in style right now. Back to you Austin…
Austin: Thanks Jen! What a girl, but that’s all we have for tonight folks… tune in tomorrow, same time same channel. Stay tuned for a all new episode of I love Lucy next. This is Austin Lesperance Signing off saying SEE YA LATER GATOR.
Sarah: In a while crocodile!
*theme song plays
Austin: Lucy, I’m home! You got some ‘splaining to do.
Sarah: Good golly Ricky, what’s wrong?
Austin: Well, you’ve gone and ruined my 3D glasses. Now I can’t watch all the cool flicks at the drive in movie theatres. Like Invasion of the Body Snatchers and War of the Worlds. Oh that Marilyn Monroe sure is a dolly
*knocks at door
Sarah: Oh that must be my dear friend Ethel. Fred, go open the door for your wife.
Nicole: Open it? I was going to lock it!
*Sarah laughs, open the door for Jen
Jen: Hey guys. I just came up to watch something on your TV, ours is on the blank. I think Leave it to Beaver is on or maybe the Ed Sullivan Show!
Nicole: Nahh baby. Let’s make the scene over to the old sock hop instead. It’s a sure thing we’ll have a blast.
*We all head out and then come back in a “car” and we start driving
Nicole: I’m gonna go ape when they play Billy Haley’s Rock Around The Clock or Elvis Presley’s Hound Dog.
Jen: You two had better not be having a back seat bingo. There’ll be tons of necking and making out at the Hop when they dim the lights.
Austin: Oh my goodness! Fred, watch out!
*we crash and everybody falls out of the car
Nicole: A plane crashed in the middle of the road!
Jen: And Buddy Holly’s in it!!
Sarah: *screams Oh my god! This is bad news.
Austin: Oh Lucy just cool it, everything’s gonna be alright. This place is deadsville. Let’s leave.
*we exit while the ending music plays
