Just when everyone thought that the indie music's pool of promising talents has dried out, then comes SOUTHRACE, one of Mindanao's premiere alternative rock bands, that fuses rhythmic instrumentals with entrancing words into a distinctly soulful Pinoy music.
Composed of Jovy on the lead guitar and vocals, Glenn on bass guitar, Nilo on rhythm guitar and back-up vocal, and Ches on the drums, Southrace is a concoction of four talented men serendipitously crossing paths to unite in one unique sonata. Ordinary men with big dreams â Jovy, Glenn, Nilo and Ches never fail to surprise an audience as they transform into extraordinary performers in every blow-your-heads-off onstage spectacle.
Southrace beats to distinct and diversified experimental compositions ranging from classical to upbeat melodies. Such multiplicity in skills and output is thanks to the members' diverse influences such as the immortal resonance of The Beetles, the more modern Green Day and Dream Theatre, and even the prided local static of Smooth Friction.
The band has been known for its electrifying strings, forceful back beats, and trademark power-jumps on breakings. They take pride on their all-original compositions that talk about the multiple facets of life and living as based on raw experiences. Southrace enjoys crooning to emotional love songs, just as it does when bursting into candid verses on delicate personal issues and social concerns that the lot of its listeners can very easily relate to.
Southrace released its first album entitled "Fresh Wound" in March 2006, with carrier singles "Grabe Ka Feel" and "Aaminin" hitting the local radio charts. "Grabe Ka Feel" was a hit and "Aaminin" was immediately touted as a commercial hit as well. Those two songs, along with another fan fave, "Home," proved Southrace's ability to draw crowds and attract undivided attention. Soon enough, the band got invited to serve as front acts for big named bands such as Six Cycle Mind, Hale, Bamboo, Itchyworms, Rocksteddy, Shamrock, and Callalily and their songs became radio airplay favorites. They have also represented the region in the annual Muziklaban competition in 2006.
Advancing a Mindanaoan musical ethos in Bisaya, Tagalog and English, Southrace released its second album, BisRock Mindanao, in September 2008. The album is composed of eight original bisaya songs, dedicated to the promotion of bisaya rock (Bisrock) compositions by artists from the south. The songs "Utang" and "Stroldyante" proved to be certified hits. The latter landed on the top spot of local station Killer Bee Cagayan de Oro City 89.3 indie music chart, and reigned for seven (7) consecutive weeks â indeed, a very commendable feat.
Since then, Southrace has been marked to be among today's most promising and in-demand performers, with shows traversing Visayas and Mindanao. They have performed before crowds in Outpost Cebu City, Oroquieta, Camp Philips Bukidnon, Malaybalay City, Valencia City, Don Carlos City, Koronadal City and Davao City. Their songs are now also a part of the regular playlists and list of the most requested songs in various radio stations in Cagayan de Oro, Davao, Koronadal, Malaybalay, Dumaguete, and even in Cebu.
Cagayan de Oro City-based band Southrace has also been nominated with the title "Best Rock Artist of the Year 2009" and "Mindanaoan Artist of the Year" by Muzika del Sur. Watch out as Southrace challenges status quo with its highly-crafted music, original compositions, diverse beats, and undeniable, pulsating potential to make it big in the national music arena.
