Happy New Year! The band would like to thank all those who came out to the 9:30 Club show, making it a very memorable first Saturday night of 2007. Also thanks to JBB and FNB for making it such a solid lineup.
SOJA is now headed to the islands which will be the start of a month long tour. After hitting the Hawaiian Islands, they will head even further west, to play 2 shows in the Republic of Palau. The band is blessed to travel so far to a nation of 300 mostly uninhabited rock islands, and play for the people of Palau, who very rarely get the opportunity to see live concerts. SOJA then stops in Guam and Saipan before heading to California where they will tour from San Diego moving north and ending in Berkley. Please visit the shows page for all the details and more upcoming shows.

Produced by SOJA and Jim Fox
Recorded, Mixed, and Mastered by Jim Fox
Already established as a reggae power on the East Coast, Soldiers of Jah Army (SOJA) dont necessarily need a landmark recording to cement their place in the genre. But the Virginia-based quintet hammers the point home on Get Wiser, the bands third and most complete release to date. It is a brilliant, convincing collection of US reggae at its best.
Preaching awareness and begging for social consciousness in times of international turmoil, SOJA makes a strong political statement, challenging its audience to embrace clarity and wisdom in light of spoon-fed agendas and diversionary propaganda.
The seasoned vets gain instant credibility on the album by enlisting a whos who of reggae music as guest musicians, including the Wailers Junior Marvin on two tracks, Rare Essences Go-Go Mickey, and Misael Clemente of Puerto Ricos Gomba Jahbari. The 14 songs marry relaxed, roots-inspired songwriting with creative arrangements, rotating a variety of feature instruments from guitars to brass, woodwinds to percussion.
Vocalist Jacob Hemphills lyrics are enlightened and positive. Every tongue of everyone / Of every state in every land / Has everything to be thankful for, he chants graciously on the opener Open My Eyes.
SOJAs musicianship is beautiful and refined as the band slowly closes in on ten years together as a unit, enchanting fans with an array of hypnotizing island grooves and melodies.
Get Wiser writes the manual on how a band known almost exclusively for its live shows can make magic in the studio. With the help of soundman Jim Fox and drawing from years in the game, SOJA has crafted a reggae masterpiece raising the bar a few notches and packing some serious ammo for the road. American roots reggae has rarely approached the heights of classic efforts from Jamaica, but count Washington, DC's Soldiers of Jah Army--a bunch of white guys, incidentally, not that you would guess--among the exalted few who have captured the soulful swagger, pulsing rhythms and get-serious message of the genre's very best. Start with the package: the cover art realigns Africa to the left of the map and the liner notes reprint every word of the poetic lyrics. The music, all 72+ minutes of it, proceeds through fourteen "chapters" of immaculately produced, simmering songs, each with its own catchy riff and hook. This is pure pop, but it's the kind that entices you to listen more closely while you sway to its grooves, and it ages magnificently with each spin. All the pieces were written by guitarist Jacob Hemphill and/or bassist Robert Jefferson; Hemphill's lean, soaring voice contrasts with Jefferson's rougher-edged, toastier presence. Nice."

SOJA has just returned from a very successful month-long tour in support of their latest release, Get Wiser, that brought them from Hawaii to San Diego to Portland to Guam! They would like to send a sincere thank you to all of the fans, promoters, fellow musicians and supporters of the movement - without all of you and your positive energy the Get Wiser Tour would not have been as successful, nor as enjoyable.
Kicking off the tour to a packed house at Pipeline Caf on Oahu, SOJAs journey began with an explosive bang. Island hoppers then took them to the Big Island and Maui where the people showed a great appreciation for their performance.
Back on the mainland, SOJA received a warm reception when they returned to familiar spots San Diego, LA, Ventura, San Luis Obispo & San Francisco and were thrilled to meet up with fans in new cities Santa Cruz, Ukiah, Eugene & Portland. SOJA demonstrated to the west coast that they are a commanding force on the rise and are sure to deliver a fiery performance when they revisit California in August for Reggae on the River.
Next SOJA took an amazing journey across the international dateline to the small island in the middle of the Pacific Guam - where they were blown away by the outpouring of love and support they received from a place they had never been! Despite some morning rain and performing on a military base, SOJA was given an intense island welcome and the unforgettable opportunity to perform for almost 6,000 fans who were singing along with them through the whole show. SOJA would like to send a heartfelt thank you to the Chamorro people for their gracious hospitality and embracing spirit.
SOJAs on a short break to recharge before heading back out on the road hitting up all their favorite east coast spots Philly, NYC, Baltimore, Ocean City, Chicago, Madison, Cleveland and are anticipating their homecoming performance at the State Theater in Virginia! Look for them at the All Good Festival in West Virginia & Reggae on the River too!
