There has long been a sense of wonder among Smalltown Poets at how a band that flies under what blips the trendy music radar screen could get the attention of the musical public. With more than a dozen successful songs at radio, extensive concert touring, two Grammy nominations, seven Dove nominations and record sales of well over 250,000 over three releases, Smalltown Poets has connected with a diverse audience and gained the respect of industry insiders. Looking ahead in wonder, Smalltown Poets has approached songwriting and recording for a new project while also moving to a new label home. " We were looking for a recording partner that would let us maintain an independant spirit," says the Poets' lead singer, Michael Johnston. "BEC Recordings seems to know who we are and that we are a song oriented band. We are happy to be working with them." Revitalized by some time off for a wedding (Michael Johnston married Amy in 2001), and two new births (in early 2003, Matt Goldman and wife, Ruth, had their second son, Isaac and Michael and Amy welcomed their first son, Larkin), the band continued a light touring schedule with Alex Peterson playing bass and Troy Stains playing guitar while beginning to record new music at Glow In The Dark Studio in their home town of Atlanta, Geogia. This time in the studio, the band chose drummer Matt Goldman to engineer and produce. "Matt is already heavily involved in the creative process and has done such a good job working with so many other bands so we didn't hesitate giving him those responsibilities," Johnston explains. Goldman has produced several signed and independant artists including: Luxury, Dennison Marrs, Arkitekt, Pacifico, Copeland, and Unicorns! The Musical, in addition to recent demo work with Third Day, Anberlin and his band National Champion.
