Jesus, Buddha & The Wizard of Oz: The story of Black Cuntry Rock
"Pack a pack horse up and rest up here..."
Black Cuntry Rock (named after the song by David Bowie) was formed on a drunken dare by Sheriff Scabs, Johnny Nero and Ahab Rex. The members met when Nero & Rex's industrial rock band played a show with Scabs' gothic punk band and both groups ended thier respective sets with a cover of Bauhaus's "Bela Lugosi's Dead." After puting some thought into the idea, the fledgling band drafted a manifesto and set their sites on the conquest of the planet Earth... and beyond. They immediately stirred up soem controversey with the spelling of their name. Due to no fault of their own, the origin of the mispelling came when the band's artist Thor, came up with a rendering for the band logo, and mispelled the word "Country", leaving out the "O". But being the fun loving group Scabs, Rex, and Nero were known to be, everyone got a chuckle out of it and the spelling of the name stuck. It's this spelling of the word "Cuntry" that some say was the mass-media downfall of BCR. Not being able to print the name in some outlets may have turned out to be dammaging to the band commercially, not to mention upset many people along the way.
"Suddenly leaking perfect..."
After only a few weeks, the band recorded their first demo ep: ".1 Black Cuntry Rock" The ep was extremely well received although air play was limited due to the explicit content of some songs. This, however, did not stop BCR from amassing an enthusiastic following from their live shows. The grit and nastiness of Rex and Nero's avent-gard style of playing, combined with Scabs' unique vocal ability and high energy, qucikly gave BCR recognition as one of the most ferocious live acts in the Chicagoland area. They also gained notoriety with their filthy disco-rock club hit "Lesbian Magic", which did manage to get regular rotation on college radio. Around this time BCR acquired, and instituted as a permanent member, Right-Eye Rita on keyboards. An addition which brought a new dimension to their songwriting as well as to their already eye-catching visual appearance. The band suffered a slight set back with the loss of their original drummer Trip Small. This did not stop them, however, from writing two albums worth of material and embarking on an extensive tour with a drum machine backing them. The tour ended when BCR found their new drummer Tony "T-Bone" DiVosso. With the new line-up, and thorough constant rehearsals and a small number of live performances, Black Cuntry Rock felt it was ready to turn it up a notch.
"Come on take a ride..."
Black Cuntry Rock re-emmerged with a new EP, ".2: The Second Annual Report of Black Cuntry Rock". They updated their sound and their live show to break new ground and knock old walls down. Black Cuntry Rock planned to gig extensively before heading back into the studio to record their highly anticipated debut album. But inner-band termoil, combined with relationship drama, drug addiction, and creative differences caused the group to split.
"Undead, Undead, Undead"
After founding Failure To Communicate Records in 2003 and partially working along side Ahab Rex, through solo projects as well as The Failure To Communicate Tribute Series of CDs, Shf. Michael Scabs has decided to relight the BCR torch. But this time dropping the cursed "Black Cuntry Rock" title and just going on as Sheriff Scabs. A few solo performances by Scabs with the help of some volunteers and stand-in musicians, were seen in Summer/Fall of 2006. One of which was at the Hedpeth festival, playing on the same bill as The Flaming Lips, Primus, They Might Be Giants and Kings of Leon among others. Scabs also met a new fanbase as he set out for a short tour along with The Dresden Dolls to promote ".2 CONTAMINATION: A Tribute To David Bowie", which Scabs both produced and played on. After recording new songs for his solo debut, The Deep Six Holiday, Scabs plans to re-enter the studio to record the BCR classics in one final homage to this late great band. The year of the Diamond Dogs is upon us. Death's song has been sung. It's ressurection time. For those of you who already know, be prepared. For those of you who have yet to witness, You've been warned. You're going to a place that is Black Cuntry Rock. Once you're here, you will NEVER go back.
Hope You Are Well.
