"Monday Morning is the debut full length from local trio Sequoia, a band formed in the tradition of somewhat heavy, but modest, midwestern indie rock. The three musicians are able to cover quite a bit of ground for a group their size. Guitarist/vocalist Wade Work plays in a treble-y overdriven range, allowing room for bassist Tim Jepsen's sharp tone to come through clearly enough to almost play a role usually reserved for a second guitar. The two are at their most memorable when they are playing synced up, harmonizing on Sequoia's many instrumental hooks. At times, Jepsen drops back and carries the rhythmic progression while Work takes a more atmospheric or repetitive lead, or Work will carry the rhythm while Jepsen takes the reins with a more complex line. Behind them, Dan Wagner (ex-Darkmoor), an experienced technical drummer, is able to add a healthy dose of rhythmic trickery to Sequoia's often bordering-on-pop progressions, preventing the sound from becoming stale. Vocally, Wade uses his upper mid range, often strained, voice to expound on lyrics that the listener can relate to, describing situations that come up in everyday life. Which is ultimately what Sequoia does, tries to create a score that goes along with the kind of things that happen to us every day. If you enjoy bands like Hum or Jawbox, you may find them well suited for your soundtrack." - Mark Oster: http://www.badresa.com
