When Beau Bretz decided to change the name A Farewell Address to SAINTSandSECRETS it would seem as though a bad breakup. On the contrary it was simple.
"A Farewell Address was a solo project that had become somewhat known as a band. When I parted ways with the members that were involved I was simply re-staking my clame."
2 years later Beau is only weeks away from releasing his new full length album "Closer To Where We Started".
Q. We'll start with the basics. Tell us a little about the new record.
A. "In the last record I was really having fun writing pop songs... sort of... As much as I can write pop songs anyway. This time I've really come back to my beginnings and fused it with the melodic perspective of my last E.P..... Hence "Closer To Where We Started". I really wanted to bring in my most personal influences and write a record that can be remembered and not just be sang along with. I wanted to do a lot more story telling and mellow things out a bit.
Q. Can you compare it to anything you've already done?
A. I would say the closest example would be songs like Band-Aid. A lot of the songs are slower and more moody. I Definitely have a large number of songs like this out there. I have a couple of other records out there (which he won't let us know how to find...he sais this bashfully) with songs in this vain, But the maturity in my songwriting has grown light years beyond the last time I tried things this way.
Q. What is your favorite song on the C.D.
A. It's hard to say. I have delayed the release so many times because I keep adding songs. Which means others get knocked off. So I love all of them. I would say I have the most emotional stock in "Until You're Here" If that's what your asking.
Q. How about your favorite song to play live?
A. Actually I haven't performed any of them live. I've been so wrapped up in recording the new album for my band Upside and touring that I've been using all the down time to really rehearse the songs in the way I want them to be delivered.
Q. If people could take one thing from this record what would you want it to be?
A. (Laughs in the way of a poker player who's trying not to act like he's got a good hand) I would say the overall theme is knowing that scars never really go away, but that it's ok. So if people are reading the lyrics I hope that they realize that feelings of loss in love are universal. To spend time avoiding regrets, instead of letting them follow us. I was really concerned in opening up in the beginning of writing process. I've always been pretty open about relationships and my thoughts, but this album has several songs that openly tell of aspects in my more daily life like drinking, obsessions, etc. But I eventually just said to myself "If it's going to be universal I have to really show the colors I've always been too afraid to show." I guess I just hope it serves as theropy for others as much as it was for me.
Q. So what is your biggest goal right now?
A. There were so many A.F.A. fans out there that I really just hope to remind them that I'm still here. I know I must have dropped off of a lot of kids radar when I changed the name. But Hopefull this will reclaim things a bit.
