Walrus Writings: Holiday Greetings from City Island!
blog post
Hey Kids:
Rubber Soul played two sold-out shows at City Island's venerated venue for music and art -- The Starving Artist Cafe & Gallery on Saturday, December 2nd.
Musicians and patrons alike enjoyed an evening of delectable delights and rousing Fab Four fare. Its always a wonderful opportunity to entertain the folks at SACG as the atmosphere tends to bring out the best Rubber Soul has to offer.
Highlights abounded. Band Soul-brother Jeffrey Mucciolo was feeling under the weather that evening but persevered to give an inspired performance behind the drums. Never-before performed material made its debut and was well received, namely "Another Girl," "Yer Blues," and "Rocky Raccoon" -- not to mention John Negron's beautiful solo rendition of "Yesterday." My personal favorite moment occurred at the evenings close when Broadway theatre actress-singer Barbara Folts -- and wife of lead guitarist Peter Parrella -- took the stage to join in on the encore performance of "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)." The band in particular got a big thrill from Ms. Folts vocal performance -- and the holiday favorite drew rave reviews from the capacity crowd. To paraphrase a line from Pablo Fanque's famous carnival poster -- the inspiration for John Lennon's "Being For The Benefit of Mr. Kite" -- a splendid time was had by all.
On behalf of the group, I'd like to thank the many people that have made this journey such a wonderful experience. First off, the Rubber Soul-sisters who are the steadying influences behind the scenes: Anna, Barbara, Helen, and last but not least Liz -- the "janey-come-lately" aspiring artist who has in short order established herself as part of the gang. Secondly, we'd like to thank the GREAT people at the Starving Artist who help create the pastiche that is a quintessential Rubber Soul performance: Uncle Bill, little Hannah (our BIGGEST fan), the irrepressible and unflappable Chrislyn, and of course the dame and duke of The Starving Artist, Monica and Elliott Glick -- who have supported us since that first Thanksgiving weekend Saturday evening back in 2004.
May you all enjoy a wonderful holiday season and we look forward to seeing many of you at our next scheduled performance at The Bayou Restaurant on January 20th. If anything else happens to come along, Ill be sure to let you know!
Peace and love to all,
The Walrus
