It is somewhat difficult to find originality in the media-based pop culture of music in this era. However, every so often, a band will step away from the popular genres of music, and create something different and unique. Straying from the norm, Riot Mentality has broken the rules, and has integrated the progressive genre into their style.
Riot Mentality formed in early 2004 in Rochester, New York. The band began as a three piece, featuring Greg Best (drums), Nate Karras (guitars), and Nick Reisig (bass guitar). Later on, front man Jim Hill (lead vocals, guitars) was added to the group.
Riot Mentality began with influences such as Rage Against the Machine, Metallica, Guns N' Roses, Audioslave, System of a Down, and Incubus. Later on, Riot Mentality began to be more progressive-based, with new influences such as Dream Theater, The Dillinger Escape Plan, and Opeth. The new influence helped the band to develop musically, creating more difficult and lengthy songs that strayed from the alternative/rock output that they started with.
Riot Mentality's new song entitled "Blinded" features intense off-beat rhythms with rapid guitar solos and melodic harmonies. The song includes three movements that have separate titles. The second and third sections have a variation on a repeated theme throughout the song.
"We're definitely expanding our horizons," says drummer, Greg Best.
"Our new song really shows how our musicianship has grown, and each of us enjoys the fact that we've created something that is different and complex. It's taking us in a new direction, and we're very happy with how our audience has responded to the new sound."
Riot Mentality has recently split up, and has headed in separate directions. They would like to thank their friends, family, and fans for all the wonderful support for two straight years.
