Loud Fast Rules Interviews Pericles!
Pericles is probably not a band that you are familiar with. Being that they are from the Dominican Republic, a place that is not usually described as a punk rock hotbed, theyve lived in relative obscurity to those not living within the island itself, but all of that is about to change. With a move off the island and to the city where great punk bands never stop stepping forward, Boston, it shouldnt be too long before PERICLES becomes a band everyone knows. Combining the furiosity of old school punk rock withthe hooks of ska-punk like CHOKING VICTIM, PERICLES have managed to forge a style all their own. Combine their talent with their unrivaled drive to better their art (how many other bands move to another country just to be heard?) and its no doubt that great things lie in the future for this band.
MC:
So how did PERICLES come together, and how long have you guys been playing as a band?
Garfio:
Well, Palero and I were in a band called SLOGAN before PERICLES; he played drums and i played bass, but we always wanted to play ska and the other dudes in SLOGAN werent really into that so we started PERICLES as a side project and it slowly became our priority, even more so when SLOGAN broke up.
MC:
Where did the name PERICLES come from?
Garfio:
That would have to be Paleros idea. Its actually the name of Pugsly from "The Adams Family" in the spanish version of the show. When he was a kid he really liked those cartoones. I found out recently that Pericles was a great statesman during the Greek empire... thats pretty cool cause when people see our name they think we are like one of those bands like SPARTA and TROJANS and such... ya dig?
MC:
You guys have managed to create a unique sound, somewhat similar to CHOKING VICTIM but not strickly limited to the ska infused punk that they did so well. Who would you list as some of your influences, and how would you describe your sound.
Garfio:
This is very true but some of my real influences range from NOFX to latin bands such as MANA and FOBIA. All of us are into different types of shit. Personally i grew up on bands like Guns N' Roses, Poisonm Blink 182, and NOFX. RANCID was also a huge influence on me. I think they really are the ones who forged our sound, at least on my end. Palero is big with LAGWAGON and NOFX and other bands like THE STROKES and MORRISSEY. Funny thing is the dude is really into Electronica. Come to think of it, thats how we became friends cuz we were both into NOFX back when punk wasnt really big in our country; those were the infamous KORN - LIMP BIZKIT days. Cachapz is mor einto street punk and such and so is Nick. So basically any music we like makes its way into our songs in one way or another. IT really just depends on what we are listening to at the time when we write them. As to our sound, I would have to say hardcore + ska + other shit = PERICLES.
MC:
You guys are from the Dominican Republic. How would you describe the scene that you have down there?
Garfio:
The scene back home is like any other in the world. A lot of trend setters and followers. The one unique thing is the scene is made up of all different genre followers. We get a lot of them at our shows, as opposed to the existences of subscenes like here in the states.
MC:
How does playing in the Dominican differ from playing here in the states?
Garfio:
Its very different. First the fact that we are unknown here in the states makes it more exciting because we get to meet new people every time we play a show and also share the stage with amazing bands. But dont get me wrong i wouldnt trade playing a show at L'abuelas house for nada!
MC:
You recently relocated to Boston in order to make the band a priority. Are all of you guys in the States now, or are there still some back in the Dominican?
Garfio:
Well, Cachapz is living in Tampa right now but the rest of us live together in Allston. Stiffy, Palero and I share a nice lil room.
MC:
What made you decide that moving to Boston was a thing that you all wanted to do?
Garfio:
Well a lot of my friends from back home live here, so about 2 years ago I came up to give College a try. thats when i decided to write our next album, "Fuck your Etiquette" in English and make Boston our home. Plus i met Stiffler here.
MC:
How has the change of scenery helped the band, or how do you feel that it will in the future?
Garfio:
The change will help the band a lot. I know we are going to me a lot of cool and interesting people along the way like you Matt. We have already opened for bands like Death by Stereo, Belvedere, and Strung Out, also did a mini tour with Choking Victim, which we have made friends with and have convinced them to come down and tour with us back home. We just finished a Latin American tour wtih Death By Stereo not too long ago. We did a show with them in the Dominican which was great. As for the future we are taking it one step at a time and see what lies ahead for us... We also hope to serve as a vehicle and help other bands back home to maybe get known here in the States and other parts of the world.
MC:
So your first Full-Lenght, Fuck Your Etiquette, is something that anybody who is into straight forward punk rock, or old school hardcore, or even harder-edge ska, can dig. I know you guys released the CD yourselves on your own label. What made you want to give starting your own label a shot?
Garfio:
Well actually my label, Chung-Ho Records!, already has 8 albums under its belt. But the reason why we started the label was because no one really gives rock a chance in the Dominican Republic, or atleast our type of rock. So we just did it and its working out better than what we expected.
MC:
How hard is it to be able to handle the label financially, being that your band isnt exactly an established name in the scene?
Garfio:
Its very hard, but recording and rehearsing isnt too expensive back home. Plus, we do a lot of fund raising for our releases. so even though most of us are on a tight budget, we can manage. I dont know what to expect here in the states.
MC:
Do you have any plans as of yet to record a second CD, or are you still happy with Fuck Your Etiquette?
Garfio:
Hellz yeah ! We already have about 23 new songs, but this time we are taking things slower. I know that if we had with FYE, the record would have been 10 times better than what is it, but i guess we are pretty happy with how things turned out. We did record and mix it in 60 hours time. I think thats pretty impressive, dont you think? As for our next full lenght. This is first full-lenght of the Pericles, band originally formed in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republica. The sound that the band presents here, its one mix of hardcore melodic and punk rock, with some touchs of ska. "Fuck Your Etiquette" in it brings the total 12 songs, all very fast and and thrilling, with good lines of cutting edge riffs of guitar and bass. These comes out in tracks like "Quiet And Dead" (this in them presents a half footprint old-school), "The Gringo Has Come! ", "Rawk Le Boat", "the O'l American Booger" and "Puercos Bad, Pericles Good", these two last ones remembering a little Rancid to me at the time of the record "Life Won't Wait", for the good tickets of ska in elapse of disc.
Pericles proves in this album that its not always necessary to innovate, is only enough not to bore you. The record gets a 10, to be heard from top to bottom.

Este o primeiro full-lenght do Pericles, banda originalmente formada em Santo Domingo, Republica Dominicana. A sonoridade que o conjunto nos apresenta aqui, um mix de hardcore meldico e punk rock, com alguns toques de ska.
"Fuck Your Etiquette" nos traz no total 12 faixas, todas bem velozes e empolgantes, com boas linhas de baixo e riffs cortantes de guitarra. Destaque para as faixas "Quiet And Dead" (essa nos apresenta uma pegada meio old-school), "The Gringo Has Come!", "Rawk Ie Boat", "O'l American Booger" e "Puercos Bad, Pericles Good", essas duas ltimas me lembrando um pouco Rancid na poca do disco "Life Won't Wait", pelas boas passagens de ska no decorrer das msicas.
O Pericles prova neste lbum que nem sempre preciso inovar, basta apenas no avacalhar. Disco nota 10, para ser ouvido de ponta a ponta.
