Aside from the obvious metaphorical nod and incantation, there are also physical property/scientific and technical implications involved in this incredulous and poignant statement.
For me it represents an expression of expounding the vast possibilities one may find, construct, attain, or be a part of in their own personal realities, no matter how voluminously distracting the macro-reality strives to or can be. On another hand, it seems to say that man can construct a physical device, tool, or implication of some sort that would drastically or dramatically change the physical surroundings and ramifications as well as any inherent interpretations, as we know it.
I'm not very sure on exactly what he was trying to say but a way it was correlated was through the constant need, and incessant desire to evolve technology and society to the point of sustainable oblivion.
