Paul Collins was an important figure on the U.S. underground rock scene. Alongside Jack Lee and Peter Case, Collins played in The Nerves. The Nerves toured with The Ramones and recorded the hit song Hanging On The Telephone, later to be recorded by Deborah Harry and Blondie.

The Nerves disbanded in 1977 and Collins formed a new band called The Beat, a band sometimes confused with UK ska band The English Beat. Paul Collins' Beat appeared on the Caddyshack Motion Picture Soundtrack, playing shows and touring with numerous artists, including The Jam, The Cure, Eddie Money, The Police, Pere Ubu Devo and Huey Lewis among others.
