David Frazier, co-founder of the rock band, Of Sound Mind, has emerged his cultivated music genius and rocky life experiences into a revelational music outlet, where he, along with band mate and co-founder and guitarists Duncan Kallas, drummer Terry Harper and bassists Lee Miles can look for the opportunities to connect with, share, spire hope, and a higher purpose for living. David will also go on to say, You will find in my lyrics that it is indeed possible to crawl yourself out of your dark hole and live for something and someone greater than yourself. The strength and fabric of family weaves its way through all members of the band Of Sound Mind. Vocalist David Frazier began his love and talent for music at the age of four, where under the encouragement of his family he immediately picked up the playing of the piano with little or no effort moving on to the drums at the age of nine. His memories of childhood are filled with tapping out rhythms on pillows and books. From there, it was on to a full drum set, taking music lessons and turning this percussion talent as a young man into an amazing career with the United States Marines where for two years David broke records for his musical skill and knowledge. Frazier was one of the youngest Marines ever to accomplish such high scoring, recognition and accolades in percussion in the United States Marines. After years of service, playing all over the country with the United States Marines, Davids enlistment was over. It did not take him long to find himself playing regularly in local and cover bands. Finally, forming the band Outspoken with some friends from Louisville, Kentucky and Nashville, Tennessee it did not take long for a major record deal to recognize the bands original and unique talent. Signed to Lava / Atlantic Records, within six months there was a released album, a tour, a hit single moving up the charts and a successful road ahead. Co-founder Duncan Kallas earliest memories are also filled with the passion of music that surrounded his family and his life. Music and instruments filled the house. Friends of his father held impromptu gatherings at the family home to sing and play in a celebration of music and friendship. At the age of six, there is a favorite photograph of Duncan, holding a guitar twice the size of a young boys body. At the age of seven, piano lessons were a weekly family affair. At the age of nine his mother and father gifted him with his first guitar and the wings to spread his passion for the instrument. Through Duncans natural musical ability and tendencies to pick up other instruments the drums soon followed. His early years studying the piano gave him a natural feel for the rhythmic and independent sense to become a drummer. Writing music became a passionate joy. During his mid teens and while still a sophomore in High School, Duncan co-founded the band Coping With Ignorance. Within one year, CWI as they were known, would explode on the local music scene and quickly expand regionally. Breaking club attendance records wherever they performed and named by radio as one of the hottest unsigned bands, CWI picked up national management and were soon opening for national arena acts such as Disturbed, Chevelle, Breaking Benjamin, Flaw and (as fate would have it) David Fraziers Outspoken. Two popular independent CD releases seemed to confirm Duncans musical writing talents. All this while attending and finishing High School seemed to also confirm the promise of a successful road. Drummer, Terry Harper, has been overheard saying, since I was ten years old everyday of my life has been about music. My passion for music has always been very important to me. God has blessed me with a wonderful talent and I truly love sharing this blessing by reaching out to people while I am playing. Raised in Louisville, Kentucky, Terry has maintained his goal by keeping his focus honest throughout his life never in trouble, never smoking and never drinking. Terrys faith has kept his life positive knowing that through his faith he would achieve his dream of playing music throughout the world in a different city each night, reaching out to new people. Louisville, Kentucky has embraced Terry as a local celebrity and musician knowing that his positive outlook, his faith and hard work (not to mention the blood, sweat and tears Terry puts in every performance) will keep him in the hearts of everyone who has had the good fortune of meeting Terry. Bassists Lee Miles has had an extreme passion for music since he was a child. My grandmother wrote a letter to my adopting parents that read: Lee loves music and will rarely sleep without it. Lee was seventeen months old at that time. Some of Lees earliest musical memories are of an antique piano, over one hundred and twenty five years old, that sat in the familys living room. Sitting on a bench and unable to reach the pedals, Lee managed to play Chop Sticks for two solid weeks before his father brought the young aspiring talent a new piano in his life. It was the beginning of his familys lifelong support for his passion. It was the beginning of a love that would drive everything in his life. Multi-talented and a multi-instrumentalist, Lee has had the opportunity to work with many local, regional and national acts on the road as a live performer and in the studio as a much sought after session musician. His many roles as a musician include drums, guitar, bass, piano and vocals. Lee has had the opportunity to work on the production side of music for a while and finds himself blessed and thankful for the opportunity to share his love of music with others. The different paths traveled by the future members of Of Sound Mind would become a study in lifes plan and the intersecting road in life for four extremely talented individuals. On a business sense, life was great for David Frazier. On a personal and spiritual level, he had been spiraling down from a dark path of drug addictions, darkness, and living only to please himself. As a result, his music career came to a momentary crashing halt and more importantly, so did his life. On a personal level, life was also on a slope for Duncan Kallas. In the first part of the year, Coping With Ignorance had dissolved. All the musical promise and personal relationships had seemed to collapse with the break up. Duncan was spiritually devastated and spent. Duncans goal was to pick himself back up from all the negativity in his life, start writing again, put himself in the studio with producer Eric Stewart and reconnect with his spiritual side letting a higher power take him where it should. As David Frazier began healing from his painful past, brokenness, drug addictions and living for self, David began to plant a new seed in his life and was inspired to use his ashes from his past to begin writing new music with a purpose. During this time, and at the urging of their shared management, David would receive a telephone call from Duncan Kallas. David, remembering the talent, respect and genuine fondness that had been mutually held, knew the telephone conversation brought the promise of co-writing music with a purpose; with someone who shared his ideals. After weeks of long telephone conversations, music and lyrics being sent electronically back and forth from Indiana to Ohio and Ohio to Indiana the decision was made to make Ohio their home and the co-founders of Of Sound Mind would spend the next three months writing and recording what would become their first EP. Through their management they learned of a talented and hard working drummer based out of Louisville, Kentucky. The EP was sent down to Louisville and as Terry puts it In the fall of 2004, I was told through a mutual friend that David and Duncan were working on a new project. Their management had kept a close eye on me through the years and finally, when the timing was right, their management let me know they were looking for a drummer. I was given a copy of the material they were working on and I was really impressed. The music was great but more importantly I could relate to the lyrics and the message David was delivering. By November of 2004, I was committed to the project and rehearsing in Ohio. Fast forward to January 2005. Lee Miles is working with multi platinum producer Tony Bataglia and is told that David Frazier and Duncan Kallas of Of Sound Mind are coming to Orlando, Florida to produce three new songs in the studio and they are looking for a session bass player. Lee sums it up best about working those sessions, During the three weeks of work I found a great relationship with the vocalist David Frazier and guitarist Duncan Kallas. We kept in touch and eventually Duncan and I spent six weeks on the road doing session work touring with a recording artist from Arista Records. At the end of the tour, I was asked to permanently join David and Duncans project Of Sound Mind. I look forward to working with some of the most talented musicians Ive met. I look forward to spreading the positive message of Davids lyrics and our music. Thus, Of Sound Mind was birthed. There is a consensus of vision for Of Sound Mind. It is only through faith, and out of the ashes of defeat, arose the beginning of Of Sound Mind.
