ODDISEA The Band

ODDISEA's main focus is writing, recording, and performing unique music with no boundaries, music that goes beyond the fixed ideas of genre and instrumentation. Formed by three music students from Los Angeles, Christian E. Avalos, Hirotaka Inuzuka, and Efren Garcia, ODDISEA spent 2004 composing and arranging their music.

In the summer of 2005, ODDISEA went on to produce their first EP record, BEING and FEELING, at SouthWest Sound in Sierra Madre, California. Engineered by Devin Thomas and Irvin Magic Kramer, BEING and FEELING delivers to listeners ODDISEAs raw energy and emotions.

In October 2006, joined by Chris Meszler, a drummer from Baltimore, ODDISEA became active as a performing band and premiered BEING and FEELING on November 11, 2006. ODDISEA plans to continue performing in the Los Angeles area in the coming year.

What ODDISEA Stands for in Todays Music Scene

When you see ODDISEA play live, you will notice that we play all kinds of music from alternative rock tunes, jam songs, rigidly written almost-classical-like pieces to plain experimental synthesizer music. Thats because we want to show our appreciation for the music that influenced us.

So what does ODDISEA stand for? We stand for the celebration of quality music. We play music for our love of music. It is all clear and natural to us to think this way. Hope you will join us someday to express your love for music.

About the Name ODDISEA

Pronounced as odyssey, the name ODDISEA means that its band members are taking a long musical journey, entering unknown waters, taking new approaches to every piece of music. We envision our music as energetic, tranquil, rough and sometimes magnificent like the ocean.

ODDISEA is looking for;

Percussion player/Mallet player

who can play marimba/xylophone and glockenspiel: who possibly owns the instrument (marimba, xylophone, or glockenspiel ) and who may also play tom-toms, claves, gongs, bells, and so on.

Lead vocalist

with good skill, unique style, and strong stage presence. Since about half of the ODDISEA repertoire is instrumental, the vocalist should play another instrument, possibly a solo instrument such as saxophone, trumpet, and other horns or woodwinds. Piano/keyboard is also fine.

Bass clarinetist & Trumpet player

Contact us if you are interested in our music and what we are trying to do, or if you have any questions. This is not a paying job. We are musicians willing to invest our time to create and perform unique and exciting contemporary music. If you are not a Myspace user, contact us at japjazz@aol.com We will ask for a demo, unless we know you personally. We wont ask for its formats or qualities. If we see compatibility, we will set up a session and see how we sound together.

Concept

ODDISEA is now expanding in size and adding variety in instrumental color and texture. The blasting energy of rock becomes even more powerful when there is a contrasting soft section before it. Rock musicians create thick and straightforward sound by playing in unison and in octaves. This texture could be more effective with a polyphonic/polyrhythmic section to contrast with it.

The sounds that ODDISEA currently creates with three guitars and a keyboard are limited. The homogeneous sound of guitars needs to be complemented and contrasted with other instruments having distinctive color, for example, trumpet, bass clarinet, xylophone, glockenspiel, and so on. By adding these instruments, ODDISEA will achieve not only variety in sound color and texture, but also the overall thickness and volume of a full band.

The Crew

Hirotaka Inuzuka

Born and raised in Japan, artist/composer/guitarist Hirotaka Inuzuka moved to the United States after high school to pursue his artistic career. He studied jazz under Kenny Burrell, Anthony Wilson, and Ron Berman and graduated from Ethnomusicology Department Jazz Studies at UCLA. His musical interests range from Rock, Jazz, and Contemporary music to various types of World Music, including his native music, Gagaku, Noh Drama, and Kumi Daiko. He is currently residing in the Los Angeles area.

Christian E. Avalos

Born on December 1st, 1982, in Guadalajara, Mexico and raised in Los Angeles, California. Art has always been his interest and he enjoy all forms of it. He believes it is the art of five senses. He is fascinated by existence and the idea that no one or nothing is completely the same. He is a curious person who lives life exploring the vast area of the soft-spoken mind, imagination. He is a current student in East Los Angeles College and a former student of Pasadena City College. In music, he enjoys the complexity of patterns, visual imagery, and emotional drives. He feels that music is like playing chess: every game is different. It's just like a humans everyday life, he says: "With the same pieces we move around to different places but remain on the same platform always roaming on the same ground. But my intentions are to connect many boards together and explore a different ground." "THERE ARE NO RULES, WE MAKE THEM." - Christian E. Avalos

Efren Garcia

ODDISEA's bassist, Efren Garcia, was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. He graduated from the California State University Los Angeles where he received his bachelor degree in Music. He had been a big music enthusiast since the age of 7, and finally at the age of 14, with his first job washing garbage trucks, he saved up enough money to buy his first guitar. After teaching himself to play, he then began composing and teaching his childhood buddies how to play other instruments. They formed a group first called Euphoria, later changed to Passengers, who worked on writing songs endlessly for about 6 years, and never really performed. The group disbanded and about a year later the former guitarist in the band, Christian Avalos, rounded up a new lineup with Efren on bass, and now leading front man Hiro Inuzuka, on guitar and vocal.

Chris Meszler

Chris was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. Through his experiences there and in Tucson, Arizona during college, he has played with a wide variety of musicians and bands and gained a lot of knowledge about the music scene in general. He began playing drums nearly a decade ago and has since created his own unique approach to the instrument by studying the prominent drummers of his favorite rock, jazz, hip-hop and indie bands. He has been involved with many projects, including Good Like Pain (played Tucson frequently, recorded 4-song EP and did a small tour to Los Angeles) and Trephine MD (played Baltimore frequently and did a six-week tour of the United States including the Emissions from the Monolith VIII festival in Youngstown, Ohio). He is now living in Los Angeles.
