Up-and-coming LA indie-pop outfit Youngblood Hawke took to a low-key studio space, spiced up with twinkle lights and vintage furniture, to perform this live version of "Stars (Hold On).
"'Stars' is a really special song for us. We had the amazing opportunity to work with Aaron Cox, the most talented, driven, sweetest, positive person we've ever met," recalls vocalist Sam Martin. "We teamed up with Aaron and Da Internz and came out with this track. It was an interesting and exciting session. We learned a ton from working with these dudes. Da Internz have a heavy hip-hop background and usually don't work on rock tracks. We've never worked with hip-hop producers."
While songs loaded with acoustic guitars, tambourines, and indie-pop melodies don't normally call for the refinement of hip-hop royale, the result is an incredible fusion of creative forces. The tune drips with polished production and fully-realized harmonies, while staying true to the band's eclectic sound and style. It also doesn't hurt that this one takes inspiration from a life subject that's felt universally.
"We instantly connected [with Aaron and Da Internz] and started to tell a story about the moments in life when all you want to do is give up and turn it in," Martin explains. "Everyone in the room shared that feeling. The song captures the feeling of fear, when everything seems so far away and unreachable. Believing in the fact that everyone was put on this earth for a purpose is one of the messages we wanted to convey."
Enjoy the video's exclusive premiere, and grab their self-titled debut EP for Republic Records [which this song comes off of] via iTunes. For more opportunities to see these guys live, be sure to catch them on tour with Passion Pit this fall.
