Columbus, OH duo Twenty One Pilots
have been winning over the airwaves with their infectious blend of hip-hop and innovative pop. Their latest single, "Holding On To You," is sure to continue the cycle. Here, spitting rhymes dot layers of bright piano, before surging headfirst into a sea of hooky melodies and reverb-tinged harmonies. A twinkling piano breakdown gives way to escalating rhythms and vicious vocals, while the entire track shines with a sense of serious momentum and lyrical finesse.
So what's the inspiration behind a track that morphs in genre as it progresses? "'Holding On To You' is a song that we chose to be an introduction single from a standpoint that it encompasses different elements from how we try to write stylistically," explains the band. "Hopefully it depicts some of what may be heard from other songs on the album, while at the same time not setting any definitive idea of what expect to hear from song to song. We hope that's a good thing."
Between its transformative sounds and thoughtful execution, we'd say it's more than a good thing. Spin the song's premiere right here and get ready for the pair's new album, Vessel
