RX Bandits are gearing up to release their seventh studio album, Gemini, Her Majesty, and today we are excited to premiere "Meow! Meow! Space Tiger." Don't let the goofy title fool you — this is quite the serious, reggae-influenced track that proves the Californian rockers have further progressed their sound on this upcoming record. Stream "Meow! Meow! Space Tiger" above.
“This tune is about facing what you fear most, or rather embracing it and turning it into an aspect of yourself that you admire," vocalist/guitarist Matt Embree reflects. "It's about breaking out of the habit of having a victim mentality and instead becoming the catalyst for something greater than yourself. I wrote this song because I went backpacking in Central America for 2 months and would hitchhike frequently. While riding in someone's car you basically either talk with them or listen to whatever they were listening to before they picked you up. That means I listened to a lot of Reggaeton. I actually kinda grew to like it. Maybe it's a Pavlovian response: I hear Reggaeton and am reminded of tropical weather, fresh fruit and fish tacos, perfect waves etc. I don't know but either way this was kind of an RX take on that style of music that seemingly every super friendly guatemalan/costarican/nicaraguan dude was listening to as we bounced and rattled our way over those beloved dirt roads in the general direction that my thumb had previously pointed.”
“’Meow! Meow! Space Tiger’ was one of the last songs to come together in the studio," guitarist Steve Choi adds. "Matt had a basic framework for a chorus that we had jammed a few times before but nothing was consolidated yet. Creatively, this tune was really free with no excessive working of arrangement or parts—we all just played off of each other. This is one of those tunes where I just play the Rhodes keyboard and no guitar, so I really went deeper with the effects pedals and manipulating my pedal board for major spaciness which usually isn't applied to keyboards as much.”
Gemini, Her Majesty is slated for a July 22 release on Mash Down Babylon/INGrooves and can be pre-ordered via Amazon and iTunes.
