Between 1700 and 1900, long-distance migrations that traveled throughout Europe, mainly South Africa to Western Europe, changed due to abolishing slave labor and beginning of the Industrial Revolution. However it stayed the same when it came to Europeans traveling and exploring to distant lands, normally to gain resources. The long-distance migration came with different economic, political, and social changes also. The industrial revolution, 1750 - 1850 and the abolishment of slave labor in 1807 changed many aspects of the world. One of the most important aspects it changed was long-distance migrations. The new technologies brought about by the Industrial Revolution made long-distance travels easier and a lot faster. Also, the end of slavery meant no more forced migrations of Africans into foreign lands to do labor. Although there were changes in long-distance migrations, one thing that never changed were Europeans that traveled to distant lands in order to gain resources. A social change that occurred with the Industrial Revolution was that it produced technologies that broadened the horizons of people traveling thoughout the world, for example the creation of steam- powered boats in 1769 by the Scotsman, James Watt, who allowed ships to not only rely on the winds to take them to their destinations but harness the power of fossil fuels too. The steam engine made the concept of long distance travels a lot more likely and would also speed up these journeys. A trip that would have taken days, maybe even weeks would be cut down to mere hours due to this amazing contraption. Not only did the Industrial Revolution help with technology but it also helped with the urbanization of factory workers. Another change that affected the political aspect of the long-distance migration was the abolishment of slave labor in 1807. By the 1900's, slave labor was abolished in almost all countries. This ended the long-distance migrations forced upon the Africans. Before the 1800's, Africans where sent along the middle passage into the Americas and the Carribean, where they would be forced to produce crops such as sugarcane and tobacco to be sent back to “The Old World”. Africans were treated with great disrespect due to them being seen as inferior. Even after slave labor was abolished, Africans were still considered to have no rights. Their lives improved slightly but they were still attacked by racism and ridicule. Despite this, the Africans where given the opportunity to migrate back to other lands. Throughout history, the greed and gluttony of Europeans drove them to many nations in order to exploit them to gain resources and land. During the 1700's to 1900's, it was no different. The Dutch established a colony in South Africa in order to gain the resources the land had to offer, in this colony, Boers (the farmers in this Dutch/African colony) industrialized the land by building railways that made extracting the natural resources from the land a lot easier, this also occurred in other parts of the world. Since the beginning of history, people have migrated long-distances for many of the reasons stated above. In the imperial countries, the method of migration has changed drastically from forced migrations to migrations that were necessary for finding new resources or profiting from something. The steam-powered boat has allowed us the ability to speed up these long-distance migrations and we still to this day force ourselves upon other countries in order to gain resources. Overall, the long distance migration from South Africa and Western Europe brought many different economic, political, and social changes that included the Industrial Revolution that changed technology, the abolishment of slavery for Africans to fight for some of their rights, and for people migrating for new resources. But going to other countries to find resources will always still be a continuity that is necessary. Mar 05
