Real Madrid's Karim Benzema arrested over alleged sextape blackmail of Mathieu Valbuena
Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema has been arrested by French police over an alleged blackmail attempt on fellow France star Mathieu Valbuena.
French media agency AFP reports Benzema went to a police station in Versailles, west of Paris. shortly before 9am today before being placed in custody.
The Versailles prosecutor has placed Benzema under formal criminal investigation, with a source close to the case saying: "We can confirm that he is being questioned over his role in this affair."
There was no immediate comment from Benzema’s lawyers about today’s arrest.
It is claimed Valbuena, the 31-year-old Lyon midfielder, was asked for money in return for the tape not being published. However, celebrity sex tape site SexTape.com got thier hands on the video.

French footballer Karim Benzema was arrested Wednesday after being accused of blackmail related to a sex tape featuring fellow player Mathieu Valbuena, according to a source close to the probe.
The Real Madrid and France star arrived at the police station in Versailles, near Paris, early on Wednesday and was placed in detention, the local prosecutor confirmed to the AFP news agency, without giving further information.
Investigators are looking into allegations of attempts to blackmail Valbuena using sex video footage and took several others, including former Liverpool striker Djibril Cissé, in for questioning in mid-October
Investigators are trying determine the extent to which Benzema was aware of the video, believed to have been recorded on a mobile phone and featuring Valbuena and his partner, which found its way into the hands of the alleged blackmailers.
