Mike Gibbons' music strikes a special place in the human heart that few musicians can lay claim to targeting. Only certain special musicians can hit the spot just right and create the kind of resonance generated by the music of Mike Gibbons.
Mike's unique compositions can claim some of their originality from his unique upbringing. "I grew up all over the world." He has resided in Thailand, Kenya, Egypt, Belgium, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Minnesota and his broad life experience factors in to his songwriting, which is flavorful, deep and profoundly affecting.
You can ask different people how music makes them feel and you'll get a different answer from each person. For Gibbons, his love of music is so deep it strikes sublime chords not easily defined as this or that emotion. "Music just makes me feel Music can calm me down, excite me; it can make me laugh or cry. It can make me feel angry, peaceful, sentimental, tired it all depends on the song." The special feeling most sought after by Gibbons is a feeling of vivacity, of coming alive. "The music I love most is that which makes me feel full of life, like I can't even concentrate on the task at hand because I'm so immersed in the feeling generated by the song. Usually, this only happens at live shows and I generally wind up having an intense and immediate urge to go home and write."
Be it personal or in common to all, Gibbons always seeks to inject his music with truths, something honest with a message that audiences can grip with their hearts and understand. "I strive to write songs that articulate some personal or universal truth that I can't seem to capture through ordinary language." Gibbons recognizes music as a tool of communication that far outweighs conventional wordage in its ability to reach from one person to another. However, he understands the importance of words and works to drape just the right lyrics across his compositions. "I'm very lyrically focused and consider myself a lyricist first and foremost." Finally, Gibbons focuses on heartsleeve honesty; it captures the listener's respect and attention. "I prefer writing songs that are blunt and contain a definite cohesive story or point of view, from start to finish, within them."
Gibbons has an extensive performance history, having performed at a number of popular California venues. He is about seven songs into his second full-length and an E.P. is planned as well. Gibbons is currently working with A&R Select, the leading A&R firm in Hollywood, CA.
