In March 2006, three avid musicians and great friends came together to form Mark Harvilla Trio, or MH3. The boundless talent, drive, and unique bonds they shared would prove, over the next nine months until the present, something about this band was very special. The passion its members have for music and the determination they have to succeed allows each one of them, as well as the band collectively, to stand out amongst the crowded local music scene, where bands spawn and diminish before theyre ever even known.
Following Marks solo acoustic recording, Shades EP, in August 2006, the band truly reached a turning point. Hearing Marks songs and voice translate so smoothly to a studio-quality record, as the tangible end result of a creation that started solely in the mind, helped all three members realize the potential the band had for success, or at least, to create very high-quality music. Shades EP contains four acoustic songs, all played exclusively by Mark, and a final full band song entitled, The Search, which gives the most accurate example of MH3s true sound.
The band is impressive, but what create the trio are the dedicated members and their very obvious talents and musical accomplishments. Bradley Stephen Sprentz, 19, percussionist, has been playing drums his entire life. All throughout his middle and high school careers, he zealously pursued marching percussion, through which he became essentially virtuosic on the snare drum. These skills set up the base for his exceptional talent on drum kit, allowing him to incorporate nearly exclusive technique behind the set. Following high school, he had the opportunity to study under various world-renowned drummers and marched as a member of the Project Percussion indoor drum ensemble.
Mark Joseph Harvilla, 18, guitarist and vocalist, has been playing guitar for five years and singing for his entire life. During 8th grade, his parents bought him a guitar, and from that point forward, a near obsession ensued. He played for hours daily, and joined various rock bands throughout high school, through which he gained musical experience and talent. He studied under several teachers, each focusing on different genres, including rock, classical, blues, and jazz. He was accepted with flying colors, to Duquesne Universitys Mary Pappert School of Music, and was named Best Vocalist of his high schools senior class.
John Anthony Shermenti, 17, bassist, has been playing guitar and bass for about four years. As a member of his high schools band and drumline, he gained extra musical knowledge and ability, as well as a good feel for rhythm. This helps him to more accurately stay in the pocket with Brads drumming and solidify the already tight rhythm section.
Mark Harvilla Trio is a band with basically all the right ingredients it takes to succeed. In only nine months, their music has evolved to unimaginable levels. Their incorporation of electric guitar and bass add a whole new dimension and sonic level to their sound. Marks imaginative writing provides them new material constantly, and their growing determination drives them further day by day. Its impossible to tell where MH3 will go, but its surely very far. If dreams can, indeed, become reality, no three people will try harder to prove it than those of MH3.
