Indie / Rock
Starting with Matt McAllister's machine-gun drumming, sustained by Nathan's shadowy pounding bass, and upheld by Matt Ross' stabbing and shrieking guitar, mar is completed through its contrast with David Davis' vocals as the changing emotional atmosphere of his singing alternately circles around, descends below and ascends above, the percussive darkness provided by the rest of the band. Through the mist of fake modern rockers adorned with costumes as sleekly manufactured as their 4/4 melodies and schmaltzy sentimentalism, mar emerges as a thankfully solid mass. Mar's songs, mathematically precise, sharp, and hard as steel, moderated by vocals maddened by controlled, present a world that's frustrated and dark, but they've found an order, and if you listen long enough, you might find it. But in this dark ordered world, in this assured post-apocalyptica, don't think that your search for order is the music's main concern. The music finds a central tension to illustrate, depicting it point by point in a mercilessly precise rendering, or some problem to dissect like a knot to unwind. Review by Shawna Ross
