The Brazilian term "malandro" has no direct English equivalent, but can be loosely translated through example. The malandro is slick, scheming yet likable, and always one step ahead. The classic Malandro, is a hero of Brazilian folklore. Celebrated in countless sambas, the Malandro is a mischievous yet loveable trickster, typically depicted in a white linen suit, perfumed scarf, and soft leather hat. Always a marginal figure, the Malandro was driven by a desire to live without working (i.e. playing Rock and Roll for beautiful people) â gambling and getting cachaca through winning at snooker or from the women that loved him. At once a proper noun and adjective, nowadays âmalandroâ describes both such a person and any action or style that recalls his character. A Malandro shows up immediately after you have bought the beer and departs immediately before it needs to be replenished. Dodging responsibility, whether social or financial, at every turn without consequence, he sambas through life.
