As longtime music aficionados, the members of the modern rock troop Mae are always listening for a song that makes everything stand still. For us, thats what music is about, says singer-guitarist Dave Elkins, who formed the band with drummer Jacob Marshall, and is now joined by guitarist Zach Gehring. I remember listening to Matthew Sweet on my Walkman as a kid and feeling like I was on cloud nine. Thats what we want to do for other people. We want to write songs that people connect to.
For their third album Singularity, Mae headed to Los Angeles, where they hooked up with producer Howard Benson. While Benson gave many of the songs on Singularity a certain radiant sheen, he also helped the band center in on a much livelier sound. In the past, weve never quite captured things the way we wanted to, so there was a very concerted effort to do that this time, states Marshall. In a rare moment of unabashed pride Elkins says, I really do think this is the best record that Mae has ever written. The five of us understand each others strengths and weaknesses now more than ever, and over the past couple years, that momentum has continued to change and grow our band in really positive ways.
The title Singularity, in fact, came out of many heavy discussions that the members of the band had while writing. There was a book that Rob and I were reading, Marshall recalls, and in it, the author used the term singularity. That was the first time I ever heard it, but he described it very eloquently as the ultimate unknowable in science... the interface between the natural and the supernatural. We realized through those conversations that there is so much more for us to learn and to understand and these ideas inspired us to question everything.
Granted, throughout the disc, Elkins and his band mates still churn out soaring ballads, but Singularity is a far more rocking affair. Weve always loved bands like Pearl Jam, U2 and the Smashing Pumpkins and on this record we wanted to tap into that, Marshall says. We werent trying to recreate a 90s record, per se, but we definitely wanted it to have that same energy. Elkins says in closing. Were just a rock band, and were happy to be given the chance to get our music out there to all of these different people.

Hey Everyone, thanks for all of you who have been coming out to see us on this tour, and thanks to everyone who went out and bought the record, it means a whole lot to us. We're in Oklahoma City at some sweet hotel with a green pool and I'm watching CNN (which has kind of sucked lately) and it's all about flooding and Michael Vick and whatnot. Has anyone bought the new Queens of the Stone Age record yet? I bought it the other day in Des Moines on our day off, and I also watched Superbad for the 2nd time, and it did not disappoint. The mall was kind of depressing, watching little kids stuff their face with pretzels and killing time by walking back and forth...but I did drink some Miller Chills that night which were surprisingly refreshing. Whatever...I just wanted to take some time to say hello to those of you who read this and to say thank you over and over again for the support.

Hey everyone, here's the deal. We heard some awesome news recently..the "Official Word" if you will. We
finally received our official release date - August 14th - and the
album will be called Singularity. So mark your calendars and plan
your listening parties. I know that "tentative" release dates have
been flying around, June, July, etc...put all of that out of your heads.
It's August 14th! Here are some other significant events that
happened on August 14th throughout history.
--In 1846, Henry David Thoreau was jailed for tax resistance.
--In 1956 a Washington, DC, DJ, Bob Rickman, created the Society for
the Prevention of Cruelty to Elvis Presley.
--In 1985 Michael Jackson outbid Paul McCartney and Yoko Ono for the
ATV music-publishing catalog. Jackson paid $47.5 million for the
rights to more than 250 songs written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney.
--In 2000 police in Los Angeles, CA, fired pepper spray and rubber
bullets to clear a crowd of 9,000 people when a free concert by Rage
Against the Machine turned violent.
--In 2006 Mae sells out Irving Plaza in New York City.
And now, in 2007, Singularity will be released. We can't promise it
will be nearly as much consequence as the aforementioned dates, but
we can always hope right?
In other news, we are in Ohio today playing Ohio University, and
tomorrow we hook back up with Relient K for the last leg of the tour.
Hope to see some of you folks out there.
Thanks for the support!
Zach

But save yourself and me (him) a little effort: "Spring 2007 is when the album is estimated to be released" and "The title of the album and the artwork are still being decided on". You can still ask "when is the new album coming out?" or "Is there a title and artwork yet?", but the aforementioned answers are the answers you're going to get for now.
Hopefully these news items will be enough to keep you busy for a while. In the meantime, keep in touch. We will have lots of news about the new record coming soon!!!
