Mackenzie Danner's Biography

New York City-born flutist, Mackenzie Danner, performs a myriad of concerts a year throughout the the United States. By the age of sixteen, she performed at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in its Grand Ballroom with the Interlochen Arts Academy Band. She earned her Master of Music in Music Technology and Flute Performance from Northwestern University in 2008, where she studied flute and piccolo with Walfrid Kujala (Former Principal Piccoloist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra from 1947-2001). She also earned her Bachelor of Music in Music Technology and Flute Performance with a Minor in Art and Technology from Northwestern University in 2004, where she studied flute and piccolo with Walfrid Kujala and Richard Graef (Current Associate Principal Flutist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra). She has since appeared as soloist with orchestras in Chicago, Decatur, IL and Michigan. She played as soloist with the Classical Symphony Orchestra in the Grand Ballroom of Navy Pier.

Recently, Ms. Danner placed third in the Walfrid Kujala International Piccolo Artist Competition in Chicago, IL. She was a finalist in the Claude Monteux Young Artist Competition in 2009, a semi-finalist in the National Flute Association's Piccolo Artist Competition in 2009, and she also won the National Federation of Music Clubs Orchestral Woodwind Competition in 2007. She has also been a finalist for the New World Symphony from 2004-2009. In 2008, she played flute and piccolo in several concerts conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas and Thomas Ades. In 2009, she performed on flute and piccolo in Mahler's Symphony No.1 in D Major with the New World Symphony, conducted by Vladimir Ashkenazy.

Ms.Danner has been heard on WNUR's StreetBeat, Evanston, IL. She has appeared in the United States at the National Flute Association Convention in Nashville, Tennessee as the Headliner Performer for "Savage Aural Hotbed."

She is a past recipient of the Margaret Morris Henderson Music Scholarship from Northwestern University, her Alma Mater. Awarded Outstanding Rating and Earned a Solo Appearance with the Festival of Flutes, Chicago. She has earned rave reviews while performing in flute masterclasses with Emmanuel Pahud, Rhonda Larson, Donald Peck, Bradley Garner, Thomas Robertello, and Marco Granados.

She has been a finalist in the following orchestras: the New World Symphony of Miami, the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, and the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra. Ms. Danner has performed as flutist and piccoloist in the Classical Symphony Orchestra of Chicago, the Chicago Metropolitan Orchestra, and the Lake Shore Symphony Orchestra. While at Northwestern University, she played flute and piccolo in the Symphony Orchestra, Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Chamber Orchestra, and Symphonic Band. She also played flute, piccolo, alto flute, and bass flute in the Contemporary Music Ensemble. Lastly, she played on baroque flute in the Early Music Ensemble, performing several Brandenburg Concertos all played on original instruments.

She has appeared as Solo Flutist in the Virtual Reality Program, "Fool's Paradise." Chicago, IL. She performed meditation-based flute music with the Spiritual Sound Union. Evanston, IL.
Ms. Danner has premiered contemporary music collaborating with dancers and choreographers. Her piece Conformity featured live flute and dance along with electronic music and an out of this world special effects cadenza.

Mackenzie's main artistic goal is to produce new contemporary music and multimedia, and to discover an artistic language that will unify the different media that she wants to work with. She is creating remixes of classical music with electronic music, and original electronic music with visual effects and dance collaborations.

Mackenzie plans to be the first TechnoFlutist in the field of electronic dance music. She wishes to play at dance clubs, and tour the world just as D:Fuse who plays live percussion while spinning records. Mackenzie will be a unique addition to the electronic music community because she can compose original music without sampling, and can perform at a very high level on flute.
