Healing Through Music in a Future Utopia

Music is defined as an art form consisting of sound and silence expressed through time(1). To me music is, in essence, the beating of my heart. The wind and the trees that play in it. Each of these things resonate sound, all in their own time. Everything is a song that plays to me because I am always listening. If I listened to a cricket hidden from sight on any night, Id have the soundtrack to a good night. I believe music can fix everything since it is so basic and universal. I believe that music is the one thing everyone is missing in their life. People try to find their balance of work versus play, and over time, lose their focus of it. Either too much work or too much play. The scale is easily tipped. Music has enlightened every single person I have ever known existed- and to my extensive knowledge, this is a grand statement. The teachings of Ghandi of Eastern Culture, the studies of the physicist Isacc Newton, Darwins evolutionism, the big bang theory, Galileo- I have recollection of so many teachings of so many great people. This is why Im so sure music can be used in the healing of the afflictions of mankind. It has been present on the battlefields as it was present in caves as it is present at hospitals. Music is so universal, it goes as far as ones grasp for it. I dont see how it isnt hailed as the oldest thing to exist. I think that it has always existed, just like atoms. I even believe music is the medium that can end all wars. The universality of it is beyond language because to our knowledge, there exists no perfect language. Music influences that which is influence able, regardless of words. There is none more perfect than the language of rhythm. The rules for music have been written, rewritten, burned, and rewritten. It his caused chaos and birthed revolution. It has brought about war. It has been a definitive part of mankind as far back as books can go. There isnt a single piece of paper that is older than music- time quintessentially. So it doesnt seem so far-fetched to say that music can heal the body.
Most people tend to experience a visceral reaction to music: a burst of energy upon hearing an upbeat song or a sense of calm during a soothing classical piece. Music therapy harnesses this connection between music and mood(2). It has been proven that music can affect physiological functions.
It has also been shown to lower amounts of the hormone cortisol, which becomes elevated under stress, and to increase the release of endorphins, the bodys natural feel-good hormones(2).
Entrainment, or brainwave synchronization as it is called, is the practice of entraining one's brainwaves to a desired frequency, by means of a periodic stimulus with corresponding frequency. The stimulus can be aural as in the case of audio, or visual, as with a Dreamachine , or a combination of the two with a mind machine. The human brain has a tendency to change towards the frequency of the dominant external stimuli applied to it(3).
Ive been open to knowledge of hypnosis ever since I wrote a paper on it. I know things such as certain states of hypnosis are achieved every day. From getting really into the drama of a sitcom/ movie, or getting into a good book, we hypnotize ourselves and each other all day. In every aspect of our lives there is a state of mind. A song can achieve any state of mind achievable by human minds To heal with sound is to heal the mind. To heal the mind is to heal the soul. I believe focused music can be the solution to virtually all problems. This is further explained in a theory called animal magnetism.
Animal magnetism is also known eponymously as mesmerism after Franz Mesmer who postulated the existence of a magnetic fluid or ethereal medium as a therapeutic agent. The (conventional) English term animal magnetism translates Mesmer's magntisme animal. Mesmer chose the word "animal" for its root meaning (from Latin animus = "breath"), specifically to identify his force/power as a quality residing in the bodies of the animate beings:(humans and animals). Mesmer chose his term to clearly distinguish his variant of magnetic force from those which were referred to, at that time, as mineral magnetism, cosmic magnetism and planetary magnetisms (4).
The existence of Mesmer's magnetic fluid was scientifically examined by a French Royal Commission set up by Louis XVI in 1784. The Commmission included Majault, Benjamin Franklin, Jean Sylvain Bailly, J. B. Le Roy, Sallin, Jean Darcet, de Borey, Joseph-Ignace Guillotin, Antoine Lavoisier, Poissonnier, Caille, Mauduyt de la Varenne, Andry, and de Jussieu. Whilst the Commission agreed that the cures claimed by Mesmer were indeed cures, the commission also concluded there was no evidence of the existence of his magnetic fluid, and that its effects derived from either the imaginations of its subjects or through charlatanry (5). Though it has been proven in todays world that this fluid does in fact exist.
Whichever teaching, whatever the knowledge already sustained, whatever term coined-there is one thing that remains; and that is music. I believe in it and will never give up on music. Because in the future, it wont only be my song that helped change the world for the better, itll be all of mankinds song. Our song as a whole, and one day, it may so be titledUtopia!Bibliography
