'There's a hole in my bucket, dear Liza, dear Liza; but I've been complaining about it for so long, there's little hope of it ever getting fixed... But for the sake of novelty and sentimentality, I'll grow to love my bucket's imperfections, rather than taking action myself. After all, without character and defining holes, what is my bucket compared to so many others? No, I believe the hole in my bucket just may be a blessing. Praise be to God for allowing the rust to overtake my bucket and make it so original amongst so many other average, common buckets! Or perhaps I'm so full of it that nothing I ever say is truly coming from my heart anymore. This bucket I once feared the worst for has completely overtaken me. Dear Liza, please help me. Dear God, please help me.'

Let me begin by saying that if you missed this show, you missed an amazing, awesome, incredible concert. With that descriptive intro, we begin.
I will admit that I did not fully appreciate the time I had to prepare for each band. I went into this show knowing very little about the openers, Alesana. I thought they were just another emo/screamo band much like Hawthorne Heights or SKSK. I was fairly wrong. While we were waiting outside, I heard one of the bands warming up, and I picked up on one of the highest-pitched screams I had ever heard. Once Alesana started, I was immediately impressed by their vocals. Three of them could scream, and two of them had incredibly high vocals. What impressed me though, was that they actually put on a very intense show. Their lead vocalist was all over the stage, and kept up his vocals in the process of jumping and moving like crazy. Their style was, in fact, very screamo-emocore, with clean vocals thrown into just about every song. The only real drawback to their performance, was that one of their guitarists was wearing makeup, and basically freaked everybody out during the show. But, nonetheless, they still managed to play a very good show.
I will now admit further that I had the next band, The Sleeping in my mind as an soft rock/emo band. My friend Matt told me he had heard thatthey were more of a Blindside-esque style, and I didn't believe him until they took the stage. When they started playing, they immediately reminded me of the late Staple. With an impressive live show, I was starting to really like them. The vocalist even managed to get a circle pit going, which is next to impossible here in Memphis. Besides engaging the crowd, the music was fairly tight, and I would have like them much more if not for the vocalist's constant use of the s-word. Such overused phrases as "Let's move this **** up front!" and "Let's get this **** going!" seemed not only unnecessary, but very hollow.
Next up, Maylene and the Sons of Disaster. Undoubtedly one of my favorite live shows, let alone favorite bands, Maylene took the stage with their style and southern... charm? Vocalist Dallas Taylor stated that being here in Memphis kinda felt like home because they hadn't been in the south for so long. They played some of the songs off of their new album II, but still played several of the older crowd favorites. The show ended with a bunch of kids getting on stage and singing along. (Shortly after which the security guards cleared the stage.) If you ever have the chance to see Maylene live, I highly recommend it.
Following Maylene, a pretty well-known band named From Autumn to Ashes took over. I was a little disappointed in myself for not at least giving myself some material to go by before seeing them live, but I was admittedly getting some of my first tastes of them live. They said that it was their first time in Memphis, and that they were really glad to finally be here. Frontman Francis Mark said that since they hadn't played here in seven years of being a band, they had to cover lost ground. They did so by playing some old favorites, which I wish I would have known going into the show, but I was unprepared. They put on a pretty good show, although there weren't really any standout moments.
Last up was Haste the Day. I have seen them live once before with their new vocalist Stephen Keech. Now, with the recent release of their album Pressure the Hinges he had some of his own material to work with. I was surprised though, because they played mostly old songs, and relatively few new ones. The crowd was pumped, and it was almost the same sort of show as the last time I wrote about. The same kids, the same band, and almost the same songs. That is to say, and incredible show. They also told everyone that Jesus Christ loved them, and to talk to them after the show about it.
If you have a chance to catch this tour, please do. If you want a night of good metalcore, emocore, and post-hardcore, you will want to drive to see this show. While not the most spiritual uplifting of tours, it was still a great time of music.
THANKS SO HARD TO:
Eric, Jacob, Matt, Rachel, Josiah, Jeremy, Barb, Joel, Stacy, Haste the Day, and Natalie.
-Daniel
