Chapter V
The Heritage of Missouri

By the 1800s St. Louis was still a French territory. But, by now there were approximately 1.000 people living there. Most were Creoles, or Spanish and French born Americans. They spent their winters talking on dance floors or discussing around their fireplaces.
At this time there were many things to discuss; such as the new English speaking settlers that were slowly making their way into the territory. The Creoles were slightly fearful that the French in Upper Louisiana would soon be outnumbered. Occasionally they would also get little snippets of news from Europe; news that concerned the French revolution or the new victorious leader Napoleon Bonaparte. Or, if they were looking for something local, they could always discuss the deteriorating Spanish power in the territories.
Being isolated from Europe, the Creoles in Missouri had no idea that they would be a tiny pawn in the military ruler Napoleons sinister game. Napoleon, like Hitler in our century had great plans for his country. Bonaparte envisoned an American empire which would enrich France and increase his pretige. (Heritage of Missouri pg 108)
Strangely, the one thing the Spanish could do that would help his plan along, they did unknowingly with open arms.
Since he had control over the Indies islands, Napoleon needed a way to feed his captive people. He noticed that Louisana was full of good exports of meats, vegetables and grains and decided that if he could have control over it he could feed his captives.
Well, the Spanish in the 1800s were all to happy to get rid of Louisana. In 1762, Spain was not prospering from its colonies; in fact, they were losing money from them. In 1800 the Spanish Secretary of State for Foreign Affaris even made the comment Between ourselves, Louisana costs us more than it is worth... So when Napoleon asked to buy it, they eagerly agreed.
