Ok, so I know we all live in a fast-paced world and everyone's lives are very busy and half the time everything seems almost out of control. Just one thing I've noticed is that there is such a lack of respect among people. I mean, really? Really people? Is it that hard to be respectful? I once had a teacher say that it takes as much time to do something wrong as it does to do something right, so you might as well do it right in the first place. I find that true. I mean how hard is it to be respectful to each other? By being respectful I don't mean to say that you have to be nice 24/7- by all means if you're a cynical person go ahead and be cynical. It's just, every day you can do something that is respectful towards another person. For example, hold the door open for someone, say please and thank you to people when asking for things, help a mother carry a baby carriage down the subway stairs, give up your seat on the subway for someone who looks like they're struggling to stand. It truly isn't that hard. I know we have all those days where our feet just kill, you've had a headache since lunch and you just want to go home and crawl under the covers and the last thing you want to do is give up your seat on the subway/bus/a form of public transportation. I'm not saying that if you're suffering you should be this angelic figure and suffer internally for someone else. I'm just saying that when possible be respectful. You could really make someone's day if you do. We all live in the same world. We all have to share this planet. Respect your environment, don't litter and try to be environmentally friendly. Respect the people around you. You don't have to like them but at least be courteous and polite. If everyone was respectful to each other think about how many people would have a better day. I'm done my little respect vent and thank you to anyone who read this. =D stagestruck
Hey!
I'm not sure how many people stumble across my page and actually read what I have to say but I think that its better to share my thoughts and let people know about some awesome movements than stay silent because silence gets you nowhere.
Anywho there's this event called Love is the Movement. If you have facebook search events and you'll find it. Below is the description that the facebook group gives. The words below are not my own words:
The truth is that according to the World Health Organization, depression is one of the leading causes of disability, with approximately 121 million people suffering with depression worldwide. The National Institute of Mental Health states that approximately 18 million people suffer from depression in America alone. Depression does not discriminate across age, race, gender, or class. Among teenagers it is estimated that 20 percent will suffer from depression at some point by the time they reach adulthood. There are also as many as 8.3 percent of teens suffering from depression for at least a year at a time, compared to 5.3 percent of the general population.
Insprired by the work of TWLOHA (To Write Love On Her Arms), an organization created to spread awareness for teen depression, self-injury, and suicide, we are coming together to make sure the whole world knows. We are not directly affiliated with TWOLHA, but are in great support of their work To find out more about TWLOHA visit their Facebook Group here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/To-Write-Love-On-Her-Arms/8529136956.
During the time of year that suicide rates are at their highest, we chose February 13, the day before Valentine's Day, as our opportunity to start showing people how much they are loved. We will physically write the word LOVE on our arms (with a sharpie, or whatever other ink suits you best). If someone asks you what its for, tell them about TWLOHA. Tell them they are loved, that they are important. And ask if you can write LOVE on their arm as a symbol of that. Don't be afraid to reach out to those who need love, those who you often walk right by every day. They need our care.
There is NO set time, there is NO set location. Where you are, when you are there, speak out.
Some of us may choose to share the love of God, but we want you to share whatever love is strongest for you. Depression has no boundaries, but neither does our love.
Stop the bleeding. Rescue is possible.
So its on February 13th and I hope if you read this blog you'll participate because I'm sure you know someone who has suffered from depression and everyone knows that depression doesn't just affect the person it also affects their friends and family. Support the movement, write love on your arms, hands, cheek wherever and if people ask you what it is tell them, ask them to also write love on them.
Thanks for reading <3
Hey Everyone!
I'm not trying to preach or anything(well maybe I am a little...) but I would greatly appreciate it if you would read this small little post of mine. If you read the title I'm guessing you've guessed by now that it is about climate change.
Yes, climate change.
Now you may be wondering...climate change, why should I care? But you should. For those of you who already do I applaud you =) For those who are a bit iffy on the subject, I beg you to not judge me straightway and call me a tree hugger but to read what I have to say and maybe think about, even if its only for a minute. If you do not believe climate change is happening I am not going to penalize you because that is not fair, you are human and everyone deserves a right to their opinion. Reading that sentence I would like you to remember that I am human and I also deserve a right to my opinion. So I beg you to read my post and maybe think about what I say below.
Many scientists after doing a lot of research believe that climate change is one of the biggest problems the world today will need to face. They believe that if our world does not start to make changes now to the way we live that the outcome will not be pretty. If the world does do nothing to prevent climate change in a few years time the whole world would most likely be in a social, economic, political, environmental and health catastrophe. Thinking about that I would also like you to remember that this is a theory and theories are not always right.
However saying that I would like you to think about what if the theory were right? What would our earth be like? What would it be like if Greenland melted and the ocean level rose? The ocean level is already rising but if Greenland were to melt parts of the world would be covered in water. For example, parts of New York City and Bangladesh would be completely submerged in water.
Climate change is also affecting many different species through out the world. The most common animals you hear about are the animas in the Arctic who rely on the icy and the ice is melting, destroying their habitat.
Moving away from the animals, lets go to us. How are we affecting climate change and how is it affecting us right now? Well with all the greenhouse gases we pollute into the air, the air is generally extremely dirty and unhealthy for us to breathe in. Also consumerism, thats another important factor. Think about the amount of things we buy; now think about where they come from, how far they had to travel to get to us, what they're made of etc. Almost everything we do affects climate change.
Now I'm not asking you to save the world and change your life completely, I'm only asking you to be more aware of what you do and just to take small initiatives that will make you live more greenly.
Some examples are:
-buy energy efficient appliances
-walk, take public transportation, car pool etc
-use a reusable water(ie.nalgene bottles) instead of always buying plastic ones
-if you like hot drinks instead of using the store where you can and buy its cups(ie. Starbucks, Second Cup, Timothy's, Tim Hortons etc). bring your own thermass, some stores even give you a discount if you use a reusable mug
-shop at vintage stores, trade clothes with friends
-follow the three R's -> Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Those are just a few examples but there are so many things you can do! I hope by reading this post you can see why it is important to take initiative and make your lifestyle more green.
You may say, "But I'm only one person and those are such small things, how will that change anything?"
That is a good point but think about what would happen if every person in North America chose one or two things to do that would make them more environmentally friendly...thats a lot of people!
Thank you for reading my post =)
