Hey, I'm Jay.
I'm a broken guy living in a broken world.
I'm fighting for HOPE, LOVE, PEACE, and JOY.
I'm fighting for you and I.
In the end, we will be victorious. LIFE will defeat death. I have faith.
Do you?

Can you make it on your own?

So... to all Canadians out there: HAPPY THANKSGIVING WEEKEND (and Americans, post-pone this message till next month). While you're chowing down on your turkey and pumpkin pie, here is some food for thought...

In our goal-driven world, fulfillment of "self" is always promoted. We are encouraged to get all our strength from within ourselves, to fight for anything we want, to earn it by our own abilities, to be independent and not rely on anyone else. Although this seems like a very empowering attitude, it is unfortunate. The trouble is that we fail to recognize our weaknesses, our need to rely on someone greater, our call to put others before self, to trust in God to provide, and to depend on Him. We seem blind to all that God has blessed us with, and only give ourselves a pat on the back, saying "good job, me."

This weekend, I hope we can all take a moment to look at what we have in our lives - not just material things, but all other gifts, relationships, and opportunities - and to sincerely thank our creator and saviour for providing all of these - especially the gift of second chances.

Have a wonderful day.

love
~Jay~

P.S. No, I can't make it on my own either.

It is dark enough...

Back in the mid-1900s, Martin Luther King said, "Only when it is dark enough can you see the stars."

Think about it. King isn't talking about the night sky or the stars, as beautiful as they may be. He is talking about our world. We all know it's a dark place, and it's even darker today than it was when King made that statement. However, the sad state of our world allows us to recognize those people who bring hope and light to the world. Those people are the stars. We need as many stars as we can get. And no, I'm not talking about phony Hollywood celebrities.

Read that quote again. Are you a star? Or just a part of the black night sky? Tonight might be your night to become a brighter star. Shine on, you crazy diamond...

The Talent...

Some wise person once said:

"A talent is something given, that opens like a flower. But without exceptional energy, discipline, and persistence, it will never bear fruit."

Hmm, I like fruit. I think I'm gonna try that persistence thing.

I AM STUCK IN TIME...

According to Kurt Vonnegut Jr., Billy Pilgrim is unstuck in time. Myself, however, I'm still stuck within the dimension of past, present, and future. To see my birth, you have to look nearly 20 years into the past. Since that point, with every 6-degree tick of the clock, with every second, I have aged a little. I guess you could say I've grown up.

Apparently I'm no longer that naive 3 year old kid, rolling around in fields of dandelions, innocently unaware of the past or the future. Back then, only the present existed. But today, I know well that the present is no more than a moment - however long that is. The present will not last. So mostly, there is the past and the future. And since there is no point floating around in the past, I focus on the future.

Now, as I think about my future more than ever, I count the days. I count the days that have gone by, and those that still remain. I can't count to the end, because I don't know when that will be. But for now, I count down to August 27th, the day I will leave home to begin university. It will be bittersweet, leaving behind my quaint hometown to pursue my big-city dreams. I know I'm not the only one counting down to that day; there is someone else. They live in a different world, but they are under the same sky as I am. Sixteen more night skies is all that separates the two of us. When I wake up in sixteen days, I won't be in a field of dandelions. Nor will I be a naive 3 year old. But that's okay. Because maybe I'll wake up in a bed of roses.

I suppose being stuck in time isn't so bad after all, because it forces you to hope in the future - whether it's the future six decades from now or the future six degrees of the clock from now. As time ushers me along its road, I'm caught in suspension. Indeed, it is suspension!

Take that, Billy Pilgrim.

The Summer of Beauty

Well it's official. I'm done my two jobs until next summer. Tomorrow I leave with for British Columbia with my family to spend a month on the Pacific Coast. I'll be seeing my relatives, meeting my two young cousins, and celebrating my grandparents 50th anniversary. Of course it wouldn't be a real adventure unless I did some exploring of the WIld West. So I'm gonna spend a week camping at Long Beach, then go on a four-day sea-kayaking trip, followed by hiking up Mount Albert Edward. I can't wait to spend time with God on the beach, feel His majestic power in the ocean, float in a kayak beside whales, and conquer one of the highest peaks of Vancouver Island. Oh, and I can't forget about songwriting while I'm sitting at the beach (my guitar is coming with me on the plane)...

By the end, I hope to be refreshed, renewed, and re-inspired to embrace the life that lies ahead of me. It will be a beautiful month. I declare this the Summer of Beauty. Let it begin!
