Joe Larracey

My heart goes out to the Larracey's. God Bless A beloved Holliston High School football player known for friendliness and for looking after smaller kids died last night after being hit in the chest during a scrimmage, school officials and family members said. Joseph “Joey” Larracey, 16, a junior and an offensive and defensive lineman for the red-clad Panthers, collapsed on the sideline at the football scrimmage at Apponequet Regional High School in Lakeville, officials said. “Last evening . . . our school system and community experienced a great loss,” school superintendent Bradford L. Jackson said in a letter posted on the school’s Web site. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.” The high school football team and neighbors poured into the boy’s home today to express their sorrow. "He was like the all-American kid. He was thoughtful and caring," said the boy’s uncle Tom Larracey. "It’s an incredible loss to society," he added as he stood at the front door of the boy’s home. He added Joey was a football player, baseball player, honor roll student and a natural leader. He said the junior lineman felt ill after being hit during a play. He immediately alerted his teammates in the huddle and then he went to the sidelines where he quickly faltered and was rushed to the hospital, the uncle told the Herald today. The boy’s father, Jim, was at his side all the way to the hospital and his mother, Charlene, met up with both at Morton Memorial Hospital in Taunton where the junior died. The uncle said, at first, they thought he had suffered a concussion but an EKG showed it was "something with his heart" that failed, possibly from a hit to the chest, and the boy’s lungs filled up. "He never made it to Boston," added Tom Larracey. "They couldn’t stabilize him." Grief counselors are at Holliston High School today to help students cope with the loss. Counselors have posted blank paper in the school’s main lobby for students to write expressions of sympathy that will be presented to Larracey’s family. Kids who knew the junior tell of a boy who cared for others and was a “hard working” and “dedicated” football and baseball player. One girl, commenting on Facebook, said she will always remember playing dinosaurs and watching “Jurassic Park” together when they were very young. “I’m gonna miss you, man!” one boy wrote. Larracey was the latest young athlete to die suddenly.
