Edgar Allan Poe uses great mood, imagery, setting, and irony to add suspense two to of his pieces The Cask of Amontillado and The Tell-Tale Heart. Short story writers and novel writers use literary elements to add suspense including imagery, setting, irony and great descriptive words to set a mood. In the story The Cask of Amontillado, Poe uses irony and setting to add suspense. The setting of this story is in a catacomb around midnight. The two characters, Montresor and Fortunato, go down and down into this catacomb, almost like into the devils house. In addition, irony also adds a lot of suspense in this story. It is very ironic that Fortunatos name is Fortunato. His name sounds like Fortunate. What happens to him is quite the contrary of his name because that night, he is very unfortunate and he is locked and chained up in a niter- infested catacomb. Another detail that adds suspense to this story through irony is that Fortunato is dressed as a clown because it is carnival season. This is ironic because Fortunato is made into a clown that night when Montresor tricks him. The mood of the story the Cask of Amontillado also adds suspense to the story. One mood is vengeance. Montresor hates Fortunato because Fortunato offended him. This causes Montresor to seek revenge and Montresor killed him. Therefore, the steps in which Montresor takes to kill him add plenty of suspense to keep the reader wondering. Another mood in this story that adds suspense is fury. Montresor is very furious with Fortunato, but he hides it very well. The reader knows that Montresor is furious, but they dont know why. Further more, this factor adds a lot of suspense to the story and makes the reader want to keep reading. In the story The Tell-Tale Heart, Edgar Allan Poe uses irony and imagery to add suspense to this short story. It is very ironic that a mad man stares at another man for about a week just because he is afraid of the eye of the man. This adds suspense because it just seems like he is watching the vulture-eyed man for days and days. Eventually, the reader will not be able to wait and see what the crazy man is planning on doing to kill his victim. Along with Irony, Poe uses imagery to add suspense to this story. The line One of his eyes resembled that of a vulture -- a pale blue eye with a film over it, Uses great imagery in the beginning of the story. I as a reader could picture the eye very well and kept picturing while reading. Just visualizing the eye added suspense. The moods in the The Tell-Tale Heart also add suspense to this piece of literature. One mood in this story is anxiousness. The mad-man gets infuriated with the eye and wants to kill the vulture-eyed man. When he sits and waits there in the midst of the night, the reader gets anxious. The waiting lengthens the suspense. Another mood in this story is guilt. The guilt adds suspense because when the man starts feeling guilty for his actions, he hears the ticking of the dead mans heart when the police are investigating inside of the house. Subsequently, the reader would want to know if the man will crack and confess to the police. Eventually, the guilt does get to the mad-man and he confesses and the story is concluded. So as you can see, many authors including Edgar Allan Poe use imagery, setting, and irony to add suspense to their writing. In the story The Cask of Amontillado Edgar Allan Poe uses great moods like vengeance and fury, and literary elements like setting and irony to add suspense. To add suspense to the story The Tell-Tale Heart, Poe uses moods like guilt and anxiousness, and literary elements like imagery and irony. I think that using these certain literary elements and moods create great suspense stories and a great overall story for the enjoyable reading.
