Why is it that we must find things out the hard way? I understand that there are many of you out there who get things and just...well, get it. Unlike me and other people it takes us millions of times to really get something. For instance, with math it takes me ten times to do a problem in order for it stick with me and remember all of the rules and what to do and what way the equation is set up. To me, math is just a bunch of numbers but there is different ways to set it up, confusing me because I never really know what properties belong with what.
But when you study the material that is given to you, then you're pretty much set. Its even better when the professors make a study guide for you to "abide" by when you study so that you're prepared for the test. We get it when we study. Suddenly we think we're the smartest kid ever and wonder why we aren't always this good in other classes.
Its like with God. There are warning bells that he gives us, and like idiots we ignore them and try to do our own thing for a while. "Don't worry God. I still love you, but I want to chill out over here if thats okay?" No its not okay. Many times in the bible, the Lord warns how not to stray away from Him and really just dig in deeper with him and be buds and realize how awesome of a Father He really is.
If you're like me, you have the material to study for that upcoming test, but you're just kind of lazy. Like you love the class and have fun, but you're just tired of sitting down and reading something. But when the test is, um, tomorrow, you cram everything is and aren't that preapred for the test and end up either failing or miraculously passing the test.
Moving out on my own really became more of a reality check for me then anything. Whoa, suddenly I'm on my own? I can do things that I wasn't really allowed to before. With me for example, I started to watch different TV shows that I wasn't really into that much. But since I was on my own, I thought I'd give it a try. Maybe see what the world was talking about and check it out for myself. Even with movies too. It wasn't a bad show, but then again its just opening a door because it wasn't all that good anyways either. Good meaning healthy. It wasn't clean, but its also wasn't disgusting. Just the worldly prospective on things like cuss words; people making jokes about beautiful things like purity and such. I didn't watch those TV shows for a while nor did I get hooked on them.
Then it hit me. "God, why do I feel so far away from you?"
I almost couldn't really hear his voice, but I sensed it. "Because you've let other things come before me."
See the Lord understands us. He knows that once we get on our own that we are going to make mistakes. Getting distracted with worldly things instead of really connecting with him. Not that I'm saying that everyone who moves out will make mistakes, but its very likely. I mean, I made mistakes even when I was living with my ma.
Suddenly it hit me. Really hard. "Why in the world am I letting things like shows and movies that do not uplift God AT ALL come in between me and the Lord?" Why would I want to impress certain people when I know in the long run that it won't be helping me and aiming me toward heaven. Because once you think about it, its really about all heaven. Whether if you're going there or not. Or if you're barely going to by and smell a little like smoke when you get passed those pearly gates. But the cool thing is that once you accept Christ into you're heart, you're covered. Jesus has got your back. But does that mean I can go ahead and still do my own thing? No. Its easy. Follow Christ. Don't just barely get in. I mean, strive for him because once you think about it its really all about You and God. Not about Lost, 24, or Prison Break. One you think about it, if you're going out of your way to rearrange your schedule to watch a TV show or having a season finale party for one then maybe its about time to see where you're really at on your road in life. Do I want to celebrate a TV show where these people are only acting like somebody that they are not?
Its so easy, that its scary. It's simple to get caught up in the world, but thats why we've got the Holy Spirit and the Bible. The Bible is the ultimate study guide. There is a reason why the Lord gave us the bible and told us to read and strive for him. Its so we can not get distracted by the things of this world. He knows that there are tests arriving soon for us and he gave us the bible to study so we can ace those tests.
When I was letting myself watch those TV shows, I didn't feel good afterward. Hmm...Maybe the Lord has got something?
So maybe you guys can join me. Instead of popping on the TV when you get home to sit down and relax, why don't you just read the bible or journal or listen to some music and really chill without something else stimulating your mind. It pays off.
