How to Get Emo Hair

The emo subculture is very cool, it's only natural that you're trying to get the look. Everyone knows a true emo's strength and status is in their hair. This article will give you the basics and norms of emo hair.
[edit] Steps
1.Grow your hair out; the front and side parts so they cover a good portion of your face. Some people grow out the back, while some don't. If it's short in the back, you can spike it up with gel.
2.Layer your hair. Get long layers about half way down your hair, and short the rest of the way up. (If you're a guy don't worry about layering your hair, unless you want to)
3.Straighten your hair, with either an iron or gel. If your hair is wavy, just use hairspray/gel to weigh it down.
4.Dye your hair black, if you're going to dye it at all. Although, dying your hair a whole bunch of wacky bright colors is considered very cool, black is the standard.
5.Flip your hair upside down and blow-dry it. It doesn't matter if it is dry already, the heat just accentuates the layers in your hair.
6.Accessorize your hair, once you're happy with the color and style. Bows are always your best choice, along with other funky hair clips.

[edit] Tips
Try not putting your hair up, as poker straight hair is best worn loose.
If you're getting a hair dye from a barbershop or hair salon, make sure its permanent. No $6 hair dyes...
If you're doing the coloring yourself, use drugstore dye; make sure that it is permanent if you've got lighter hair. You will get called a poser if your hair starts to turn blond within a day.
Put random clips in your hair, especially barrettes. Even if you're a guy, none of the other emos will laugh at you.
Straighten your hair, though some emos can have curly hair even if it looks weird. If you have curly hair, straighten just the front.
Straighten your hair in small sections, especially if you have thick hair. Don't sweep the straightener through your hair. Slowly straightening your hair actually locks in some of the moisture.
Hot Topic and Claire's have some of the cheapest hair accessories, but if you're in a pinch, your local dollar store can offer you some very nice things. Check on eBay as well. Just type "emo hair" for the search.

[edit] Warnings
Stay away from the emo stereotype if it doesn't suit you.
Don't overdo the hair clips and barrettes.
Try not to color your hair with kool-aid.
Do what you want to do with your hair, not what anyone else tells you.
Never cut yourself. This is a terrible thing to do, and it has no place in the emo subculture; seek help immediately!
