Ok for some reason only part of this got put in my other post. so here is the rest of my notes/thoughts on Philip Pullman's Golden Compass.
Hope You enjoy it, and thanks for reading.
His Dark Materials could be an acceptable, if not praiseworthy effort if Pullman was a believer, who wrote the trilogy to bring awareness to other believers about the corruption of the Church. However cense this is not so, they remain little more than a means of blowing of anti-religion steam for Pullman.
If the authors intentions can be discarded, as previously discussed, ( this was earlier on in the paper) an entire different message could be take form His Dark Materials. To begin with the Church is really not a Church in a religious sense but simply the title given to the government. The witches could easily represent the Christian body of believers. Although the term witch was given to them, they have none of the common characteristics associated with witches, except that they fly on boughs of cloud-pine. Pullmans witches are far more similar to Tolkiens elves than they are to traditional witches. Both the witches and modern day Christians stand for and believe in many of the same things. After Lee Scoresby and Serafina Pekkala rescue Lyra from Mrs. Coulter at Bolvangar, Serafina explains the priorities of a witch:
Serafina considered, and then said, Perhaps we
dont mean the same thing by choice, Mr. Scoresby. Witches
own nothing, so were not interested in preserving value or
making profits, and as for the choice between one thing and
another, when you live for many hundreds of years, you know
that every opportunity will come again. We have different
needs. You have to repair your balloon and keep it in good
condition, and that takes time and trouble, I see that; but for
us to fly, all we have to do is tear off a branch of cloud-pine;
any will do and there are plenty more. We dont feel cold, so
we need no warm cloths. We have no means of exchange
apart from mutual aid. If a witch needs something, another
witch will give it to her. If there is a war to be fought, we dont
consider cost one of the factors in deciding whether or not it
is right to fight. Nor do we have any notion of honor, as bears
do, for instance. An insult to a bear is a deadly thing. To us
inconceivable. How could you insult a witch? What would it
matter if you did?
Witches do not care what others think of them, but do what they feel is right. They are also generous and believe strongly in helping others. Through another long conversation it is revealed that witches believe that someone created them, and that everything has been predestined. Even though the witches never use the term God in any cense, their ideals and principles are reflect many of the same principles of modern believers.
Many good morals can be taken from His Dark Materials. However, there are just as many negative messages running through the trilogy. One of the most major, beside Pullmans religious beliefs, is Lyras heritage. Her mother, Mrs. Coulter, was married to a politician when she fell in love with Lord Asriel, her father. After Lyra was born and Mr. Coulter found out about Asriel, he sought to kill Lord Asriel and the child. Lord Asriel overpowered Mr. Coulter, but Mrs. Coulter wouldnt have anything to do with or the child after her husbands death. In the entire book it is not mentioned in that what happened was in any sense wrong. Another negative message is that it is a good thing to be deceitful, or better have the title of deceiver. The Gyptian Ma Costa calls Lyra a deceitful child, but means it as a complement; and Lyra does get out of many situations only by her ability to lie. Besides these things there is a good deal of violence and cruelty; including a fight to the death between two armored bears, and various skirmishes between the Oblation Board and the Witches and Gyptians.
Story wise His Dark Materials is much more progressive than The Chronicles of Narnia or Harry Potter; in the sense that from the beginning of the first book there is a feeling that everything is leading up to a grand conclusion like The Lord of the Rings. Everything that happens is to some decree essential to the plot. Where as books like Harry Potter contain many sub-plots that serve little purpose other than to amuse the reader.
New-Line Cinema, who previous productions have included blockbuster versions of the Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Notebook, has recently finished filming a film for the Golden Compass. Set to release on December Seventh Two-Thousand Seven, the Golden Compass will star Nicole Kidman as Mrs. Coulter, Daniel Craig as Lord Asriel, Ian Mckellan as the armoured bear!!!!, and Dakota Blue Richards will make her debut as Lyra.
The fim looks really good, but from what i can tell they changed the plot from understanding Dust to a race to capture Lyra and the Alethiometer, so perhaps all the religious hurah will be taken out too.
It's not even december first but i'm gonna' wish you a merry christmas. so have have a good holiday,if for no other reason than because i told you too!!!!!

so, yeah i saw Relient k and Switchfoot and on the 11th while they were on the Apatyte for Construction Tour. it was completely amazing!! ok acually as far as concerts go i have know idea if it was good or not, the last concert i went to was zoegirl and carmen in 2000, and i was all of eight. but ii liked it, and its my opinion that matter to my blog. Ruth, who oopened acually probly had the second best act. (relient k being the best). i was really looking forward to switchfoots but it was acually somwhat disappionting, although it certinally wasn't bad, it just was as good as i was anticcipating, but still worth seeing. relient k's was the best by far. the highlight song woulf be a toss up between relient k's In love with the eighties, Forgiven, or Sadie Hawkiins Dance, or Switchfoots we are One Tonight. Relient k alsso bplayed an unreleased tribute song to the Office, the Jepordy theme song, as well as some christmas songs, on top of 15 to 20 of their most poplular songs. They were also more intristing to watch as they where continually changes insterments and had paino on stage as well as several other slightly unsual insterments. So a completely amazing tour that you shouuld check out if it comes near you!
