I Spat This Out.

Were you always standing there?
Hat in hand, bowed over your boy's body.
Take it in, dirty thing, take it in.
Soiled and spoiled and trod into the dirt
You wait and you wake and are soaked in fresh earth.
Clay in the hands of an insomniac potter
We are figured, disfigured, remembered.
Were you always standing there?
Forearm brushing sweat from a brow barely there,
Mouth open wide over broken beast's body.
Take it in take it in let it out let it in.
Hair standing up on the back of your skin
Become and beseech, believe and bereave
We were one.
But flesh held by flesh, as you crouch and you heave,
Bow by your boy and spit out his seeds.

North East South West

Driving sober and alone through nowhere at night
Craving motion, craving tension, needing air
With the windows disappearing, destination nearing
It waits with foul breath of old beer.
I'm not drinking, so am I driving? Am I driving you wild?
Is it too cold for you, with the windows cranked low?
Does the chill match your chillness? I am warm head to toe.
You shiver in your seat and I make no gesture
Simple sober gaze through the windshield, to the mirror
Is this strained? You need sound, you will not concede
to suffer a silence, save the wind and your breathing.
I drive you sober and sadly through nowhere at night
And yes, alone also, I am
Just because you're present does not make you here
My high beams sketch the landscape, not my tears.
Caked with the suaveness of good looks and bad luck,
At least you think you're happy when you're drunk.

Drinking For A

You wandered far. You sought the sky
Collapse was not what you bargained for
This empty desert, now this empty frame of being
Can't be sure of water if you can't be sure of breathing
(Your talents are hers
Taken up some degrees)
Lost in a canyon, writing psalms will not redeem.
Only sand and dirt and an empty canteen
Only you and the earth and a mouth full of teeth
to gnaw at the surface of cactus and and meat
to gnash at your meal, bon'apetit
The hunger so raw, but followed by sufferance
An appetite for water to crawl to the surface
Wander on now, when you journey so far
Maybe then, maybe, you'll taste what you are
Your grittiness quenched and your
toes in the mud
You stand like a king on the way to the throne
For now it has happened--
You are now to You become

Thirsty like a horse in the salt of the sun
Kneel you now and drink what you've won

Mockfeather.

We stole the salt from the sea: you and me.

We are children, we are innocent; yet we are thieves.

Sitting alone on a briny patch of beach,

There we were as two infants, and there remain shall we.

We tore the thunder from the sky: you and I.

Gazing above at a storm's first creaking sigh,

We outnumber the pardoned and god-fearing side.

We are vagabond robbers. And as such we shall die.

We pocketed the sunrise in our small and golden hands.

We groped it out of nighttime and protected it from man.

No longer will its fingers brush over the polished land.

We take it from the morning, each grain of time's own sands.

We took the tide's breaking: yours and myself.

We locked it alone in a wave's private hell.

As we left the bright shore, it bids out its farewell.

Tomorrow comes no longer, for no longer tides will tell.

We have broken the earth of each fruit of its womb.

We have stolen all life beneath any inch of blue.

Yet after all this, the world brings us to a tomb.

We no longer bash the landscape, for the world has taken you.
